  1. How about The Lovely Bones? Peter Jackson directing, great cast including Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Saoirse Ronan, and Stanley Tucci, based on a beloved novel. While it could easily become this year's Reservation Road, I think it still merits early consideration.

  5. I think you should include Kenneth Branagh for Best Supporting Actor in VALKYRIE. He's been overlooked before, and if he's as good in that as I think he'll be, I could see him getting a nom.

I also think BODY OF LIES will do better than you think. I don't see what sensitively portraying Arab culture has to do with a film's mainstream success. As long as it isn't preachy or outright bad, I think people would like it. BTW, I've just received a copy of the Monohan script (probably an early draft), and if it's as good as his previous work, the movie will work.

  7. Brad Pitt BEST ACTOR 2009!!!

  8. I'm forward to watching Hoffman, DiCaprio, and Pitt.

I hope Valkyrie is good. I'm not sure how Cruise's reputation will hurt the film. But it is dealing with some meaty (and interesting) material. And, I hope the CCoBB is as good as the short story from Fitzgerald. I know its not going to be a literal interpretation, but if it can capture the very essence of the story, I will be pleased.

  9. Brad Pitt deserves a come back - he was snubbed for Babel. He was great in Jesse James, let's see how he does in Button - it sounds fabulous.

  11. I was reading intersting notes from various newspapers, and a lot of them put "Crossing Over" like an important contender (Top Ten):

-Crash/Babel resemblance: I hope the film soen't like Crash in all senses (overracted film), but Crossing over is about a group of stories in a same context
-Political and social issues: inmigration in LA.
-A-Stars and newcommers: We have Harrison Ford, Sean Penn and Ashley judd (A-List), Jim Strudgess, Summer Bishil, Alice Braga and Alice Eve (newcommers)
-An foreigner and intersting director: South african director Wayne has a critical darling (The cooler) and a discrete box office film (Running scarred)...

  12. John Malcovich in Burn After Reading is going to be a strong contender in Supporting actor. He has a great part. And I hear rumors that Kenneth Branagh is very good in Valkyrie as well in support. And if he pulls off a charismatic performance, I don't see how Heath Ledger won't get nominated in support as well. It should be an interesting year, that 6 months ago I didn't have much hope for, but I have been turned around. My top 15 most anticipated films for 08 are Milk, The Other Man, Australia, Valkyrie, Burn After Reading, The Dark Knight, The Argentine, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Seven Pounds, Defiance ( my no# 1 most anticipated so far )Reveloutionary Road, Frost/Nixon and Body Of Lies.

  13. What about Emily Watson in Within The Whirlwind? Sounds like a contender if that makes the cut-off date.

  15. i'm very excited for next year. i think that the lead actress race will be exceptionally interesting. I have a question thou. is cate blanchett's role in benjamin button lead or supporting?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Blanchett's role seems more supporting. Her character is important to the development of the main character and story, so I'm not sure how they will classify. I would presume supporting. But, I'm not certain.

I'm reading the script now, it's pretty darn good. The AMPAS might be turned off by the length (161 pages, which is roughly equivalent to 3 hours)...It is certainly a different type of movie. I'm excited to see how Fincher going to showcase this wonderful story. But he has a good track record, so I'm sure he'll do a great job.

  18. Bloody hell, I didn't even notice that. Thanks for the heads up Verbal Intercourse.

I really really hope Valkyrie is good. I loved The Usual Suspects, and Bryan Singer's movies since have been almost entirely comic-book adaptations.

  19. Finally, Another theme:

I'm sick to the tabloids, and now Marion is in the eye of the hurricane, for a french interview a year ago.

I watched the interview and I'm sure that she's the victim of the bad traslation of a british pseudo-journalist (Maybe Julie Christie fan) in the London Daily mirror.

She is acussed for being Anti-american and a declaration of a conspiracy to the Bush administration about the 9/11.

I watched the interview very well and I tell you she's the victim of a bad traslation of a horrible british pseudo-journalist.

If it's a sin being sceptic and open mind of a lot of theories. I'm guilty and burn in the hell. This is unfair and disgusting

  20. I think Body of Lies stands a fair chance, given the types of movies that have been winning best picture of late (The Departed, No Country).

Keep your eyes open for my "One Category at a Time" column over at The Oscar Nazi.

  21. I think Rachel McAdams might be nominated for The Time Traveler's Wife, especially now that the release date has been pushed to November.
