These look pretty good, but I'm thinking that American Gangster could get in over The Diving Bell & the Butterfly. Possibly Sweeney Todd.
It's been said that the producers like to nominate challenging and difficult projects rather than money-makers. American Gangster had some real setbacks before it finally got made and released, which is why it could get in. And Sweeney Todd's producers are very well-respected - and this was a movie that was also not an easy project. It took the backing of both Dreamworks and Warner Brothers to get it off the ground.
Juno is a longshot, but that might get in also. A little film that's surprisingly making money.
Yeah, he's been pushing for that film more than anyone. I agree with No Country, Into The Wild, and Diving Bell. I'm kind of skeptical on Atonement (no love from any other guilds). I personally think that There Will Be Blood will sneak into Atonement's slot, and if the Sweeney rumor is true, it'll replace Michael Clayton.
Yeah, Myles, it's almost like he's campaigning for it. It's great that he supports the film, but I've always feared that his method would create backlash for it, you know?
Sasha Stone just posted the other nominees, for animated and documentary:
Animated: “Bee Movie” (Dreamworks Animation) “Ratatouille” (Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation) “The Simpsons Movie” (20th Century FOX)
PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AWARD IN DOCUMENTARY THEATRICAL MOTION PICTURES “Body Of War” (Phil Donahue Productions/Mobilus Media) “Hear And Now” (HBO) “Pete Seeger: The Power Of Song” (The Weinstein Company) “Sicko” (The Weinstein Company) “White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki” (HBO)

Juno, American Gangster, and Sweeney Todd have all done well in the box office. So I'd expect at least one of them to get in.
ReplyDeleteRumor has it there will be two big surprises when the PGA nominees are announced. That might shake up the entire race!

I saw that, Bryan, and based on Tom O'Neil's (not-so-subtle) hint it appears that one of them is Sweeney.

ReplyDeleteAccording to the post at Awards Daily, here are the PGA noms:
ReplyDeleteThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Well, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is certainly a pleasant surprise. Not too surprised at the other choices.
I really thought Sweeney would be nominated here.
