The Dreamgirls/Departed Effect: Is AMPAS Changing?

Our latest article by Josh Kirschenbaum is all about studios learning from past mistakes and at the same time, making the race a lot more accesible for the small, early-released and un-baity films...

"When the academy decided to forsake the ubiquitously campaigned Dreamgirls for the atypical and less campaigned contender The Departed, they sent the message that they were tired of being told who to vote for. From now on, they would decide for themselves. Right?"

Is there a change in progress within AMPAS?

  1. I also think AMPAS will begin to change as the voting members get younger. More urban films will probably benefit the most.

  3. It's a nice thought...but I don't think one year is sufficient proof that the academy is changing.

  4. I looked in vain for the name Scorsese in your post, but surely he explains two of the movies you mention. Already by 2002, people were starting to feel guilty that he'd never won Best Director, which explains why Gangs of New York was nominated. Same for The Aviator in 2004. By 2006, everybody knew the next film he directed was going to win, so how could they not nominate The Departed?
