Yes! The Lookout in Best Picture AND Jeff Daniels for Best Supporting Actor in said movie!
ReplyDeleteI'm so thrilled to see that film getting its deserved attention.
Curious when the last time was that the Best Actor Oscar went to someone not even nominated at the Satellites? And if DDL indeed is not the favorite we think he is, who takes over momentum? Denzel? Langella? Also surprised by the Atonement dis, though I don't see its Oscar chances being harmed much. Very interesting stuff, and potentially a big boost for NCfOM.
ReplyDeleteI was so excited about The Lookout I didn't even comment on the other things. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are so many films and actors that I'm pleased to see here, not limited to: Tommy Lee Jones (yes!) and Viggo! In fact, I'm thrilled in general with the Best Actor drama nominations.
I'm glad to see that Marion Cotillard is in there, as is Julie Christie and Laura Linney. And Don Cheadle, who had been all but forgotten about and is now getting notice in the precursors for Best Actor comedy/musical.
Neither Sweeney Todd or TWBB are in there, and neither are any of those actors. Perhaps these weren't screened? I guess that one of the issues that can arise with late releases.
We'll have to wait and see what happens in the later precursors and how it will all bode for the Oscars. Despite the fact that DDL and Depp didn't make it into these early precursors they both have so much momentum (and Depp has so much popular opinion working in his favor) that I can't see them getting shut out of the Oscar race.
wow atonement was not in the best drama! wow! and sweeney and TWBB havent been screened yet or in sweeneys case were screened yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI remember about 2003, when The Pianist and Chicago don't have any single nomination in the satellite awards and finnally...
ReplyDeleteChicago won 6 Oscars including best Picture and Supporting Actress
The pianist won three Oscars including Best Actor and Directing.
Including the Golden Globe could happen... remember in 2004, only the two winners were nominated by an Oscar: Charlize Theron (won the Oscar) and Diane Keaton...
Last year... three actors were nominated to an Oscar: Forest Whitaker, Ryan Gosling and Leonardo DiCaprio
Sorry... Only Renne Zellweger was nominated in major category for Chicago... Like There will be blood, only one nomination
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked some critics are cool enough to nominate Knocked Up and Shoot'em Up. Hah. Take that, glossy Oscar bait à la Atonement...
ReplyDeleteActually, There Will Be Blood was screened, it got a nomination in the tech categories, its been screening for almost a month. Day Lewis just plain missed. They hadn't seen Charlie Wilson's War or Sweeney Todd though.
ReplyDeleteIn 2005 only Jake Gyllenhaal was nominated by the Satellite and the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Amy Adams and Frances McDormand were nominated by the Satellites and the Oscars. Anybody won. The winners
ReplyDelete-Danny Huston and Val Kilmer
-Laura Linney and Rosario Dawson
Including in a strange turn Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams were ignored by the Golden Globes. These nominatins are no so important.
Great for Eastern promises and No country for old men
