Any effect on the Oscar race?
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMARION COTILLARD BEST ACTRESS!!!
THANK GOD FOR THE BAFTA´S...
THIS WAS SO WELL DESERVED!!!
good for Tilda Swinton! Id choose her over Dee anyday
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that Cotillard wins! I hope that this means that she has the British vote at the Oscars! It would be even better if La Vie en Rose swept its categories.
ReplyDeleteYESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
ReplyDeleteCotillard best actress!!
I'm so Happy!!!
It was such a pleasure to see that a HUGE awards show - the BAFTA - chose Marion Cotillard as Best Actress.
ReplyDeleteEspecially being Christie british (sorry, Christie).
Sure Christie is still the frontrunner for the Oscar, but ooohh it was so great to see her lose such a huge honor do Marion. Christie might win the Oscar alright, but hail the british and their impeccable, sophisticated choices!
Wow, the EXTREMELY American Juno won best original screenplay. Even against the screenplays from This is England (best British Film) and The Lives of Others (best Film not in English).
ReplyDeleteEven her homeland awards has chosen a foreign performer over British Julie Christie. HUGE boost for more deserving Marion Cotillard!!!
ReplyDeleteYay I so happy!!! marion Cotillard for the Oscar!!! She's the best actress of the year and deserves this!!!
ReplyDeleteLittle surprise for Tilda... I think Kelly Macdonald or Samantha Morton are the safe choice...
And a nice surprise for Marit Allen, maybe Atwood and Byrne are not the safe choice in costume
Maybe Atonemet won Best Picture... But 2 for 14 nominations... bad result
Cotillard was the best actress of the year and it was so wonderful to see her being recognized!
ReplyDeleteI still don´t think she will be walking away with the Oscar, unfortunately. But we can at least hope for it...
COTILLARD DEFINATELY DESERVED THAT AWARD!!! SHE DESERVES THE OSCAR AS WELL TOO!! MAYBE THIS WILL GIVE HER A BIG BOOST AFTER ALL SHE DID TURN IN THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF ANYONE ALL YEAR LONG.. ITS ONLY FITTING THAT SHE SHOULD WIN THE OSCAR!
ReplyDeleteCotillard totally deserves it. Actually, I think her performance was the years best (male or female). It would be SUCH a shame if she didn´t win at the Oscars. Christie won the SAG, so she is, in fact, the favourite. Only Jodie Foster, Annette Bening and Renee Zellwegger won the SAG and lost at the Oscars in 14 years!
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the BAFTA´s, only about 4 actresses that won the award (in the last 14 years), won the Academy Award...
Odds are in favor of Christie...
However...
Marion deserves it. If Christie wins, that Oscar is stolen!
Julie Christie will get the oscar for a subtle beautiful performance. I am happy that Cotillard won something. Christie received in 1997 the award that Anthony Hopkins received tonight. They have already awarded Christie for her body of work.
ReplyDeleteReceiving a 'body of work' award is totally different than winning a competitive one.
ReplyDeleteOk, Christie´s performance is good and subtle, so what? Cotillard´s performance is that and way more...
And Cotillard didn´t win 'something'... she does have a Golden Globe, LAFCA, Boston, Satelite, now the BAFTA, and only lost the National Society of Film Critics to Christie by a mere 3 votes...
Christie does look like the winner after being awarded the SAG, but as we saw with Ruby Dee, they do take into consideration the 'veteran thing'. Too bad. Cotillard may not win, but she deserves it. Hands down.

ReplyDeleteWouldnt be able to choose b/w Christie or Cotillard even with a gun at my temple...... Cotillard's take on Piaf goes beyond mimicry, she brings out the heart and soul of a diva turned dissipate....Christie gives a perf any actress at 66 would kill to give......her eyes simply haunt me!
ReplyDeleteOh I so want Cate to win - the girl's awesome and she so deserves a second Oscar on her shelf! I know there'll be other nominations but I think as great as she is she is often underrated by some people.
ReplyDeleteBest Supporting Actress is so much fun this year!
ReplyDeleteCate Blanchett wins the Golden Globe;
Amy Ryan wins the Critics Choice Awards, LAFCA, NYFCA, National Board of Review and National Society;
Ruby Dee wins the SAG;
Tilda Swinton wins the BAFTA;
Just imagine if Saoirse Ronan wins the Academy Award! ;)
Congrats to Cotillard and to Tilda on the BAFTA's. They were wonderfull in their respective roles, especially Cotillard. However, I have to agree with Parjayna who commented earlier about Julie Christie's magnificent performance in "Away from Her". This move really is wonderful and she is outstanding. The look in her eyes at moments of lucidity vs those of sheer bewilderment are clear evidence of master class acting.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck Julie, we're rooting for you. Bring the second Oscar home!!
Let's get Christie and Cotillard on screen together, it would be a great matchup of multigeneration actors working together to bring about fantastic film results ala Maclaine/Winger, Hepburn/Jane Fonda, Dench/Blanchett. A film lover's dream...
I agree with a comment posted in another topic...
ReplyDeleteChristie and Cotillard should star together in a remake of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"
That would be sooo good.. lol
Go Cotillard, you delivered the BEST performance of the year!
For some clarity, if Christie wins the Oscar, which she totally deserves, it was awarded to her, not stolen!!
ReplyDeleteThis Oscar belongs to Cotillard. If Christie wins - which she probably will - it will be unfair.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy reading this blog. Its offers very diverse opinions and I now feel compelled to submit my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI am an actor and a voting member of the Academy for 23 years. I am a former nominee, having been nominated 2x for acting and once for producing a documentary. I have looked at all the nominated performances for all acting categories and this is one of the strangest years I have ever encountered. Here are my choices along with my predictions:
My Choices:
Film: No Country for Old Men
Director: Julien Schnabel
Actor: Daniel Day Lewis
Actress: Julie Christie
Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem
Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett
My Predictions:
Film: No Country for Old Men
Director: Cohen Brothers
Actor: Daniel Day Lewis
Actress: Julie Christie
Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem
Supporting Actress: Ruby Dee
The Why:
Day Lewis wins because he's that good. Outside chance to Clooney and Viggo.
Christie was magnficient. A very gentle peformance which transcends emotion and time. This one will last in the minds of voters. Master class acting at its best. Does not get any better than this If not Christie, it's Cotillard's, hand down.
Bardem's performance would scare Freddy Krueger. His walk, the vacant look in his eyes. Pure evil captured on film. If he loses, its as shocking as the Giants Super Bowl win.
Here is where the fun is. Ruby Dee is a great actress, in fact she is iconic in terms of her performances and range. However, if she wins, and I think she will, it will be based upon legendary acting status. Her role was limited. Blanchett really stood out her, as far as I am concerned. Amy Ryan was very good, so either of them would be a good win. Its great that Tilda Swinton was recognized. She is an excellent actress who for many years has been underrated. She should have been nominated for "The Deep End" many years ago. "Atonement"'s Ronan was the bad seed. She reminded me of Patty McCormack from her Oscar nominated performance in the 60's. Look to see her on the short list again. She will have a fantastic career.
Horay for Hollywood! Thank Godness the strike will be over by then. I will be watching from my sofa like the rest of us. Past nominees (without wins) don't get invited to present that often. enjoy folks!!
Great Respect for Cotillard, Mortenson, Linney, Clooney and Swinton. My personal preferences are mine.
Enjoy the show and thank Goodness the strike is over!
Horay for Hollywood!
Out of curiosity. To the actor nominated twice, who are you?
ReplyDeleteGo Marion Cotillard!
ReplyDeleteThis Oscar belongs to you!
You deserve it hands down!
Can't share who I am, but I was nominated in the 1970's for BSA and nominated in the 80's for BA. Nominated in the mid 90's for the documentary..Thx for asking though..
ReplyDeleteif you don´t want to expose yourself, then don´t play games or give out hints, especially if they´re so easy... As far as I´m concerned, only 1 actor was nominated for both supporting actor (70´s) and leading actor (80´s), without having any wins or any other nominations...
ReplyDeletewow...this is really something..Academy members (or not!) voicing their opinions. I belong to AARP, does that count? LOL -- for the over 55 set, I would like to see Julie Christie win. Other than that, who cares?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone really think people tell the truth on these things? Probably some nut case, if not the truth. Probably not an Academy member but maybe someone w/ entirely too much time on his/her hands. Who knows, maybe they are a former nominee and they fudged the facts. People are too weird. Good luck to all the nominees.
ReplyDeleteI care! I want to see Marion Cotillard win! Too bad that´s not going to happen, since Christie has to much love and admiration going for her (or for her body of work). I don´t think it´s fair do compare Christie (and all she´s done before) with Cotillard (who´s basically an unknown). Christie is twice her age.
ReplyDeleteThis Oscar belongs to Cotillard!
christie may be 2x her age, but is 3x hotter and 4x a better actress. With age, comes wisdom and master class acting.
ReplyDeleteWe will see in the future if Cotillard is really a one hit wonder ala Valerie Perrine, Carol Kane, Sally Kirkland and Ali McGraw. I would even include Louise Fletcher in that category as well, and she won!! My guess is that Christie will win, and if not, it will be Cotillard with a strong dark horse in Laura Linney.
ReplyDeleteChristie is 2x Cotillard´s age but so what... Hal Holbrook and Ruby Dee are also way older than Christie and are they really better actors?
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, Meryl Streep was exactly Cotillard´s age (actually 1 year younger) when she delivered the best female performance in film history with "Sophie´s Choice"... nothing Julie Christie has EVER come close to...
If Cotillard is a "one hit wonder" then it´s OBVIOUSLY only because she´s french. Would they cast her in "The Silence of the Lambs" or "Million Dollar Baby" or "Boys Don´t Cry" or "The Accused" or "Shakespeare in Love" or "Erin Brokovich" or "Monster" or "The Hours" or "Walk the Line"?
Nooooo... and that´s too bad. That explains quite a lot, actually - Isabelle Adjani was nominated 2x (a record for french actresses); Catherine Deneuve 1, Anouk Aimee 1, Juliette Binoche won and as nominated for roles where she spoke english (playing a foreigner).
Go Marion Cotillard. What the hell does winning an Oscar mean anyway. Her performance is already way more respected and remembered than many many many Oscar winners, including Christie´s performance.
Meryl Streep had already won a first Oscar and an Emmy by the time she won for "SC". She has well proven her acting ability with a total of 14 nominations, more than anyone, living or dead. No one is lambasting Cotillard. It's simply a matter of opinion.
ReplyDeleteSome of the responses on this blog are so agressive. Lighten up folks...everyone get's their respective rewards in the end. No one takes the Oscar to heaven, its either sold back to the acedemy of placed in a museum or as Paltrow does, put in in the back of the closet or use it as a door stop.
I would take exception to Cotillard's performance being way more respected. Look at who has won the lionshare of critics awards and the award from SAG. If you are respected by your peers, as Julie Christie has been, I think that speaks for itself. If those who are in the profession with you and have rewarded you for it, bravo.
ReplyDeleteCorrection needed on the facts. Julie Christie was 25 years old when she won for "Darling". She was great then, and she was even better now. If she wins, and I think she will, it will be for this performance, not for her body of work. This is not a Henry Fonda/Geraldine Page win.
ReplyDeleteI like Julie Christie, I think she´s a great actress, and actually, I think she should have won in "Afterglow".
ReplyDeleteHowever, taking into consideration what she had done before, I consider her performance in "Away from Her" warm... I don´t think it´s that incredible, and definitely not that challenging.
I think she did deserve a golden globe, but winning more than that is a bit overrated in my opinion. Don´t take me wrong, I think she´s good and touching, just not that outstanding.. like I said before, warm. I´d rather see Laura Linney win, actually.
Loved Christie in "Afterglow". Love Linney as well.
