I can't quite make up my mind about Baz Luhrmann. He earned my undying hatred after what he did to Shakespeare's greatest play in Romeo + Juliet, but almost redeemed himself for that seemingly unforgivable offense with the surprisingly excellent Moulin Rouge!. I wasn't looking forward to Australia before I saw this trailer, and it has done little to change my expectations. Hopefully it will have more in common with "Rouge" than "Romeo." Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't give any indication, so I can't say I'm particularly excited about it.
Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare's greatest play? I would have to go with Hamlet or Othello.
ReplyDeleteKing Lear or The Tempest
ReplyDeleteWhy did you hate Romeo+Juliet so much? I really enjoyed it even though I saw the movie after studying it in English class.
ReplyDeleteRomeo + Juliet was nothing more than Luhrmann showing of his manic style. It's too goofy to take seriously but the retention of Shakespeare's dialogue makes it to serious to laugh at (or with). Essentially, it's a gimmick, and Shakespeare deserves better than a gimmick.
ReplyDeleteR+J sucked a lot, but romeo and juliet is not his best play. almost everything else he ever wrote is better than that play, hamlet othello macbeth king lear much ado about nothing comedy of errors (or any of the others).
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to this film. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about this proyect and this trailer didn't convince me either...
