Although I'm not that big a fan of "Amelie" (interesting idea with some fantastic sequences; unfortunately also coupled with just too much whimsy and charm that you feel suffocated), "Micmacs" definitely looks interesting. If there's one thing I respect about Jeunet's craft it is his unique style which I am sure could never be seen anywhere else.
I went and did some looking into on "Animal Kingdom" and I really think it's going to be one to watch for the Academy Awards.... but it is getting a summer release which may hurt its chances some.... but then again early release dates don't seem to be a HUGE problem anymore so long as the film can hold its weight and is good enough to last that long. I mean both The Hurt Locker and Crash were festival movies that got summer releases....
as far as Animal Kingdom is concerned I think that it looks to have a shot in the screenplay category, and seeing that the Academy loves to reward young actors who give great performances with nominations (especially if it's their first, they at least give one out most years) James Frecheville seems to be the best bet for an acting nod out of the cast since the whole story seems like it is going to revolve around him, he looks to have the most weight to carry.
I also think Animal Kingdom might be one to watch. Very much looking forward to it!
And I must say 2010 looks like a lot more inventive year than 2009. 2009 was a bad year to have 10 Best Picture nominies, but it could be a very strong top-ten this time around. Ghost Writer and Shutter Island would have been locks for nomination last february, but might not be this year.
Time will tell, but I think it will be a better year.
As far as "Animal Kingdom" is concerned, I definitely think it looks like a very strong film, but like Joey, it honestly doesn't look main-stream enough to be called a contender this early on. That's not to say it definitely won't get recognized, but right now it's not extremely likely.
And Joey, I'm very glad you (secretly) agree with me on "Amelie". Like I said, just way too much whimsy, but I think that the scene in which she leads the blind man across the street is absolutely incredible. If the film had had a focus for being more like that, I'd love it as much as many people do.
It's so early, banking on anything, big or small, is a bad idea.
As for Amelie, my issues with it are a lot of what people love about it, so hey...it's all good. I like it just fine, but I don't worship it like some.
Animal Kingdom looks good and seems to be in keeping with the success of several television miniseries down here on crime and the "underworld". But it is Australian and we do some pretty piss poor efforts in between the brilliance, so will see how it turns out.
Micmacs looks really beautiful! Frustrating because I want to be watching the screen for every second but have to read the subtitles.
And I thought that in a dumb moment I could handle Marmaduke despite Owen Wilson's voice until I saw the poorly CGI-ed dogs dancing. I'd really have to be wanting to dumb it down to watch that one.
Who would you like to see be the main villain in the next Batman film?

ReplyDeleteAnimal Kingdom looks fascinating. I've been a big fan of Guy Pearce's for years, but the film looks very interesting on its own merits.
ReplyDeleteJoshua- My girlfriend would murder you for not bowing before Amelie, but secretly, I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteAnd yep,. Guy Pearce is always one to look forward to watching...

ReplyDeleteoh... and in regards to the Marmaduke trailer-
ReplyDeleteWHY KIEFER SUTHERLAND?! WHY?!
Ben, Animal Kingdom sounds like a long shot, but hey, anything is possible...
ReplyDeleteAnd I say that to everyone involved in Marmaduke...
