Produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Denzel Washington, The Great Debaters may sneak into the Best Picture race a la Million Dollar Baby and Letters from Iwo Jima.
Starring Oscar winner Denzel Washington this could be yet another chance for him to be nominated or strengthen his chances tremendously. With senses of Dead Poet's Society, this could be that feel-good film of the year that the Academy just eats up.
Based on the trailer, (which is a big NO NO!) we're looking at consideration in Picture, Director, Actor and Supporting Actress for young Jurnee Smollett which some of you may remember as Michelle's best friend Denise on the hit 90's TV show "Full House."

I saw the trailer for this when I went to see American Gangster the other day. The movie really does look great. Based on the trailer, Washington seems even better than in AG.
ReplyDeleteIt's too early, but I could definitely see this one sneaking in there, both for picture and lead actor.
Oprah? Ewww
ReplyDeleteGoing into November with almost no buzz, the film will have an uphill battle to get noticed, but if the quality is exceptional then I have no difficulty believing it could get several nods.
ReplyDeleteI can see why you are of a mind to pick this as a possible contender. It looks fabulous. Nevermind the fact that two oscar winners are in starring roles, but the screenplay is wonderful. That may get a nod, as well.
