now, i know it might be a stretch, but if you check out the trailer to the film "Stop Loss", you might get an idea of where i'm coming from. Sasha Stone over at AwardsDaily posted the trailer earlier today with a similar notion, but without my theory on if this film can do any damage in THIS year's race. If the film is indeed as good as the trailer makes it out to be (yes, i know the crapshoot that judging a film on its trailer can be) Paramount might want to drop this film in some theaters at the end of the year in order to qualify it for Oscar consideration. The director os Kimberly Peirce, whose only other film "Boys Don't Cry" got their attention almost a decade ago, so if the quality is there, the film is topical and seems to not go over the top.
See for yourselves and let me know if this is something that holds any water or if i'm way off....
This is a great trailer. The film looks to be well-made and powerful, and this is a topic that I'm sure will draw a lot of sympathy and sentimental feeling. It will hit home with many. From the trailer it looks like the film does not go over the top with the subject matter and it seems like they've done an excellent job.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see if they sneak it into 2007 at the last minute.
Great trailer but I dont think so
ReplyDeleteIt's not scheduled for release until March 2008 according to IMDB. The forum there is already buzzing with political arguments about stop-loss and desertion. The film is probably too political for this year, given all the other ones competing. They're probably better off not sneaking it into 2007.
ReplyDeletei'm thinking that if it were to come in quietly around new years without any real advance hype (which has been deadly for Iraq movies so far....perhaps this means good things for Grace is Gone and John Cusack, but i digress...) so perhaps its politics would be less of a hinderance than usual
ReplyDeleteperhaps this means good things for Grace is Gone and John Cusack
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting thought. The movies about Iraq are sparking intense (and some very nasty) debate. Some people are ready for films dealing with it, but many aren't. Even with the hype and excellent cast members, a lot of people just weren't going to see these movies. And if they did, they weren't going to like them.
How long was it before people would finally accept a film about the Vietnam War? Several years and certainly not while the war was still going on. That's the problem with movies about Iraq - the war isn't over and won't be for a long time. But I digress - my point is that, as many others have been saying, politics and the war as a subject is a double-edged sword.
John Cusack's buzz has been building though - there's even one panelist on the LA Times Buzzmeter who has him as the frontrunner already. I hope he does get a nomination. If this film sneaking in without hype around New Year's could help boost attention for Grace is Gone and his buzz, I'm all for it, although I'm not so optimistic about that. But it would be great to see him finally get some love.
my thoughts exactly....though the fact that Cusack seems to be in a movie mor about healing than Bush-bashing might work in his favor.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't open until next year.
