There's more than Johnny Depp and Daniel Day Lewis in the Best Actor race. Find out who are the rest of the leading men fighting for a spot in this year's most competitive category.
I'm really excited about this category...more so than the rest of the acting categories. I would love to see Johnny Depp walk away with oscar, but Daniel Day Lewis is the best actor you have in the running. More so than Denzel Washington. I think he should have won for Gangs of New York, he should win this one...easy!
Daniel Day Lewis will win. He is good actor but definitely not the only one running. I'd love to see Johnny Depp win an Oscar because I think he is a fantastic actor too, but I doubt he gets nominated. There are too many critics ready to cut the film down (no pun intended) because they're all tired of Depp and Burton. Depp made too much money on the Pirate films so critics think he is sell out, hack actor now.
I highly doubt that the legitimate and respected critics are going to criticize Depp's performance in Sweeney Todd just because of the Pirate films. Those are done (hopefully) and he's moved on.
And, with the exception of the couple of clunkers Burton made, like Planet of the Apes, overall reviews of his films tend to be fairly decent (79%+ on RT). I don't think the critics are as down on Burton as people think. The Academy voters may be another story.
Day-Lewis is undoubtedly the frontrunner, as this looks to be the same kind of epic one man show performances that Oscar has been rewarding the last few years with Whitaker for Last King of Scotland, Hoffman for Capote, Foxx for Ray, etc. I'm sure Depp will win one day, and will likely be nominated if the film is good, but I doubt he'll win this year. Sweeney Todd's critical reception needs to be astounding for it to be considered in most categories, and with so much buzz for it right now it will likely be undone by its own expectations.
I agree that Daniel Day Lewis has a great shot at a win this year, but TWBB is not a film for the masses and that may affect his chances at a win. Most of the feedback so far suggests that it's more of an art film. Although I still think that many will see the movie because of him.
Who would you like to see be the main villain in the next Batman film?
