Would like to thank David S. for pointing this out. This changes a lot. A LOT! (We have more movies to debate about! More movies get an opportunity for oscar recognition! the months between march-august become more relevant!) ---> Will comedies, foreign, animation, and action flicks get more love? I don't see 10 dramas getting nods.
On the down side, 10 might be too much. Will the academy have to reach for the 9th and 10th spots (8th?)? In a given year, how often do we get 10 movies that are Oscar worthy? Some years we do, many years we don't.

If you ask me. This is horrible news. :-(

Doug please elaborate . . .
ReplyDeleteIMO there are many pros and cons. Hopefully AMPAS will take this oppurtunity to broaden the scope of movies they honor, and not just nominate 10 mediocre but 'Oscar Baity' films. Also, assuming that the ten nominees only applies to best picture, best director will still have 5 nominees which will hopefully point out the top 5. At this point I'm at a kind of meh-yay type of emotion. I just want to see how it turns out next year.

ReplyDelete10!!!???? 6 or 7 is a good number...
ReplyDelete10 might be too much. I've thinking about the last few years and whether 10 movies could get a nod, and normally it's one or two movies that get shafted . . . not five. I don't know how I feel about this, but increasing it to 7 seems more reasonable than 10.
ReplyDeleteDont like this at all, especially since The Dark Knights snub, they decide to give it to ten?
ReplyDeleteOK, so if best picture then why not every other category?
Like you said, what if its a dull year, when 10 films really dont deserve the nomination.
Also the top 5 is a coveted prize, having 10 options takes the esteem away from films that previously made the grade, or ones that should.
This means that the ceremony will be much longer too. That will be problematic for its audience figures that have dwindled over the past decade.
To me it's like saying "ah fuck it, everybody can be nominated!"
Nope nope no.
Kai
I just can't see how 10 nominees are relevant. It takes away the prestige of being in a top 5. Now its like a critics top 10... or like the BFCA nominations and nothing more! Hell, the Academy and BFCA are more than likely going to choose the same 10 films every year (possibly) and it also takes fun out of predicting the Oscars every year! Instead of debating what's going to be left out, etc - all we can do is put the 8 strong contenders there, and two possibly unpredictable and unconventional choices... It's a very bad idea, I think.. :-(

10 is too much. WAY too much. When was the last year 10 movies deserved a best picture nod? Maybe it's a hoax . . . I don't understand their reasoning for making such a dramatic expansion. Even the MTV awards best pic is only at 5.
ReplyDeleteFrom article:
ReplyDeleteHaving 10 or more was common in Hollywood's golden age 60-70 years ago. Ganis noted that 1939's 10 best-picture nominees were "Gone With the Wind," which won, "The Wizard of Oz," "Stagecoach," "Wuthering Heights," "Love Affair," "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Of Mice and Men," "Dark Victory" and "Ninotchka."
Personally I think this is could be great if indeed deserving foreign films, comedies, and documentaries start getting their due. You still only get one winner, and it just means more quality movies get widespread attention.
BFCA has 10 noms. That's the only one I can think of. I'm kind of hesitant, but I wanna see how it turns out before making judgements.
ReplyDeleteI think this is really dumb, if films like The Dark Knight get nominated we still know they have no chance in hell at winning...this is really dumb instead of expanding they should just not be as damn cliche with their picks and include different types of films...
ReplyDeleteAssuming they recognize the best movies from different genres, this might be a great idea. But, what's stopping them from nominating more "The Readers" in place of Wall-E or the Dark Knight.
ReplyDeleteThey're doing this for ratings. That's the only explanation . . . Movies like the Dark Knight will never win, but a nomination will get people watching.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty obvious that this is a gut response for the crap they got when The Dark Knight and (to a lesser extent) WALL-E weren't nominated. I agree that 10 nominees are a bit excessive at this point. Ganis talks about 1939, arguably one of the best, if not the best, year for movies. But '39 is really the only year to justify 10 nominees (I think 2005 might have been a contender, but that's just me talking). It's going to be very interesting to see what this does.
ReplyDeleteSlumdog Millionaire
ReplyDeleteThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Milk
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
????????
Wall-E
The Dark Knight
The Wrestler
Doubt
Revolutionary Road
?????????
Really Josh, haha I thought 2005 was such a shitty year, what did you like about it so much? In my opinion 2007 would be the year to justify 10 nods.

I also agree 100% that those were prolly the top 10 of 08
ReplyDelete-Andrew
This is terrible. Why change it? Keep it at five.
ReplyDeleteThis pisses me off. It's not that big of an accomplishment to make the nomination if there are nine other people.
Ten is a bit much...what ever happened to 6 or 7???
ReplyDeleteI agree that 10 is far too much, I believe 7 is a much better number. This lessens the importance of winning a nomination.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are always 1 or 2 films that always, always get left out of the best picture category, but opening the competition up to 10 nominees is not the way to solve it.
Well if you ask me, this takes all the fun out of predicting the nominees in the first place. If only a select few can get in, then it's an exciting guessing game, and the results are as interesting for what you got wrong as what you get right. Now it's just boring, because so many will be nominated, so you're almost guaranteed to get a few right. While I like the idea of snubbed films getting a chance to shine, I feel like 6-8 would be a better number. 10 is definitely too many.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy. It's kinda good because films like TDK and Wall-E will get recognition.
ReplyDeletePredicting will be a bitch. Sorry to use the word but i cant find any other.
The Hurt Locker
ReplyDeleteThe Lovely Bones
Nine
Shutter Island
Funny People
Up
The Hangover(Don't Judge Me)
The Road(My projected winner)
And a three way shootout between Invictus, Avatar, and Public Enemies.
I'm not really into this. We would get like 5-6 movies every year that are locks already in december.
ReplyDeleteThe only positive thing I can think of, is that this will put an end to the trend of releasing oscar-contender in december only. This way movies from earlier will have a much better chance. Wich will be good for summer blockbusters and animated flicks.
Probably:
ReplyDelete(1) Invictus
(2) The Lovely Bones
(3) Hurt Locker
(4) Precious
(5) UP
(6) The Road
(7) Avatar
(8) NINE
(9) Shutter Island
(10) Serious Man
This aren't in order of probability of getting a nod. Inglorious Basterds might get some love. I really don't know. I think Invictus and NINE are definites. Musicals and Clint Eastwood dominated when there were only five slots. We might see two Clint Eastwood films with 10 slots.
i'll have a blog entry with my thoughts on the matter up in a bit, but let me just say that this could go either way, it could be a blessing or a curse...either way, this will make this first year of it very very interesting...
ReplyDeleteidk what to think
ReplyDeleteit's a wait and see approach i think
ReplyDelete-Matt
wow....
ReplyDeletethe dark knight, wall-e and the wrestler could have really benefit from this last year.
Maybe. We are presuming that the DK, Wall E, and the Wrestler were 6, 7, and 8. It's very possible that they weren't in the top 15. More evidence is needed to support the claim that the DK or Wall could have benefited.
ReplyDeletethanks for this good coverage Keith! You and Joey afterwards really held it down!
