Indeed, the Internet Movie Database has come up with the 15 top rated flicks made since 2000. Most of the movies are somewhat expected, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but a few, like The Pianist or Up, caught me a bit off guard. Augh. The Dark Knight, I still can't warm up to that movie. And Up, the least they could do is not count films from this year seeing it's not done as yet...and Up, seriously though. Anyhow, what do I do I know. Here's my somewhat arbitrary list.

ReplyDeleteOh my. The Dark Knight #1? Honestly now. It's just all of the fanboys who get on there and think it's the greatest movie ever so they give it a 10.
ReplyDeleteI would include Babel, Atonement, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and Finding Nemo.
And technically, shouldn't they have waited until all of the films from this year came out so it could truly be the best of the entire decade?
If you'll all remember, there was a big hubbub when Dark Knight came out last year and skyrocketed to number 1 movie of all time on IMDb's list. Quite simply, nothing has come out since to take it off that throne. Does it deserve the spot? Maybe, maybe not. Should it be surprising that it got the spot? No. Fanboys will be fanboys. I will say, I'm delighted to see the inclusion of two of my favorite films, Memento and Lives of Others, on the list, and I am generally impressed with some of the more international choices.
ReplyDeleteI happen to think that The Dark Knight deserves that spot unquestionably, and before Nolan I hated batman...and I actually know more non comic fans then comic fans who love the film as many wish it wasn't quite so seeded in realism that way some of the villains they want to see came come into play later on in the series(if it continues). Its much then a superhero film its an engrossing tragedy that plays out like a crime thriller.

@Matthew--The Day After Tomorrow? You're the first person with good taste I've ever known to like this film. But the rest of your list is pretty cool, save The VIllage and The Lake House.

I think I'm gonna hold out for the rest of the films from this year to come out before I make an official list. But list-making is tons of fun, even if we don't all agree.

ReplyDeleteJordan, I'm with you about Big Fish. I just didn't enjoy it. It was good, but not great.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about The Day After Tomorrow, for me, is like some of the other films in my top list: it makes me forget the world outside. Strange, given that this film has a message about just that! But I can put it on, and sink down into it and enjoy it. Then there are other films, for me like babel, that, while powerful in themself, and have great stories, and great performances, I can't say I would ever watch it again but it didn't entertain me. I think sometimes we forget that movies, originally, were about being entertained.
So, for me, those films in my list, are the ones that either touched me very deeply, like Brokeback Mountain, or helped me forget the real world every time I've watched it, such as The Day After Tomorrow.
My taste in films is very much like my taste in just about everything, especially music - it's very broad and eclectic.
