Hollywood Reporter Ranks the top 10 Movies of the Decade
The List.
10. The White Ribbon
9. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
8. Cache
7. Divine Intervention
6. Far From Heaven
5. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
4. The Fog of War
3. No Country for Old Men
2. United 93
1. Letters from Iwo Jima
. . . Is it me, or is this list a little bit off?
I wish there was a more objective way to determine what movies are the best. Nonetheless, I'd like to hear your top tens of the decade (unless we've been down this road before).

Normally I'd wait until the decade was officially over, but judging by what 2009 has offered so far, I'm not feeling like the last month is going to present anything significant. Here's my list:
ReplyDelete1. There Will Be Blood
2. The Assassination of Jesse James...
3. The Incredibles
4. United 93
5. Brokeback Mountain
6. Pan's Labyrinth
7. City of God
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
9. Letters from Iwo Jima
10. Y Tu Mamá También
I firmly believe that "Angels in America" is the best thing filmed this decade, but since it doesn't really count, I'll post a Top 11:
ReplyDelete1. Angels in America
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Rachel Getting Married
4. Far From Heaven
5. In the Bedroom
6. Where the Wild Things Are
7. You Can Count On Me
8. Chicago
9. The Squid and the Whale
10. Sweeney Todd
11. The Hours
i'm waiting for the year to end, but yes, it's so bad of a list (just because it's clearly leaving stuff out on purpose and trying to be different, even more than I usual do) I never bothered to put it up...
ReplyDelete1. Brokeback Mountain
ReplyDelete2. In Bruges
3. The Dark Knight
4. Mystic River
5. Memento
6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
7. The Constant Gardner
8. Little Miss Sunshine
9. The Assassination of Jesse James...
10. Half Nelson
That's the best they could do????
ReplyDeleteI did absolutely love Angels in America!. Here's my list of movies as it stands today . . .
ReplyDelete1. LOTR:The Return of the King
2. LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
3. The Hours
4. LOTR: The Two Towers
5. Brokeback Mountain
6. Doubt
7. The Others
8. Crash
9. Finding Nemo
10. Children of Men
I recently watched Assassination of Jesse James, and didn't love it as much as I had hoped.
ReplyDeleteI think he lists some good choices, but there are a few on there that are clearly up there because he wants to be different (Fog of War, Cache). Fog of War is brilliant, but I can't count it as a movie. It's certainly one of the best doc of the decade.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, I can't name ten because the year isn't complete. But, I can list the movies that I know will be in my top ten:
Memento
City of God
Minority Report
LOTRs (are we allowed to group them as one VERY long movie?)
I think one complete ring of lords is acceptable...
ReplyDeleteright now I basically have about 20 films that I know will be in contention for my 10 best of the decade, just waiting to see if anything from this year can make the list...
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, I'm holding out a spot for Up in the Air. I think it can crack my top ten. I have about 15 movies in mind, but I know the few that I listed will be there.
ReplyDeleteI think it possibly could make a play for mine, though my #1 film of the year so far is currently at #11, so it'd have to be better than that, and no, I won't say what that film is...yet
ReplyDeleteMy guess is Basterds or Funny People.
ReplyDeleteI make no claims to the accuracy of your statement, except to say that you should expect to see both of those films on my top 10 of 2009 list...
ReplyDeleteThe 15 films from the decade that are also in my Top 50 of All Time
ReplyDeleteDonnie Darko
Gangs of New York
Into The Wild
In Bruges
Kill Bill
Little Miss Sunshine
Lord of the Rings
Man on Fire
Match Point
Memento
A Scanner Darkly
Snow Cake
Solaris
Traffic
Unbreakable

I havent seen much from this year...but as of right now my top 10 would go something like this...
ReplyDelete1. There Will Be Blood
2. City of God
3. The Departed
4. Wall-E
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
6. The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
7. Children of Men

9. The Royal Tenenbaums
10. The Lord of the Rings

ReplyDeleteDefinitely thankful for all the readers! Thanks for commenting Dave.
ReplyDeleteAtonement is my favorite film of the decade. After that, I'd have to think about it a lot longer... but my list would also include Letters from Iwo Jima, Babel, Far From Heaven, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
ReplyDeleteFar from Heaven
ReplyDeleteNo Country for Old Men
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
Diving Bell and the Butterfly
All excellent choices, the rest definitely not best of the decade (I have to wait on White Ribbon though once I finally see it)
This is a tough list to make, so I've put mine in alphabetical order...to keep from having to pick which is better. Ha.
ReplyDeleteBABEL
CHILDREN OF MEN
CRASH
THE DARK KNIGHT
ELEPHANT
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
MEMENTO
PAN'S LABYRINTH
WALL-E
Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
The Hollywood Reporter clearly leans towards...um...good films...but of the slower less plot arch variety.
ReplyDeleteLook at how they're all so...watching from a distant.
here we go
ReplyDeleteKill Bill
Lord of the Rings
Pans Labyrinth
The Departed
Wall-E
Moulin Rouge
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Wallace and Grommit:Curse of the Were=Rabbit
Inglourious Basterds
The Dark Knight
Hollywood Reporter's list is more than a bit strange. I mean, seriously, as much as I loved some of the films on this list, it seems a bit slanted. Anyway, in keeping with the above posts, here's my list (in no particular order):
ReplyDeleteLOTR
Pan's Labyrinth
Food Inc
The Pianist
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
United 93
Wall-E
Into the Wild
Children of Men
Man on Wire
