Nominations in all categories are already here, I really didn't see coming Linney and Jones' nominations but I'm glad we all got some surprises to talk about this morning.
Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood make our official Best Picture lineup but only the last two made the Film Editing category.
Jason Reitman finally got recognition (where it counts the most) for Juno and I guess you can say the same about Surf's Up. (?)
Where you surprised by Jolie's snub? What surprised you the most this morning?
I can't even believe that Norbit got nominated for Achievement in Makeup....Are they trying to make up for not giving Eddie Murphy the Best Supporting Actor award last year?
ReplyDeleteI'm really bummed about Hirsch, Penn, and Into the Wild. Reitman and Jones came from left field. However, I am super excited for Linney, as I thought her performance carried the Savages.
ReplyDeleteJason Reitman and Lee Jones suprised me the most. Im excited for Reitman but Jones? come on. Also, hairspray is nowhere to be found!!! not in costumes or song or art direction or makeup!!!! (even though I love how Enchanted has 3 songs up!!) glad ruby dee finally got her due.
ReplyDeleteshocked about Reitman and Jones.
ReplyDeleteSurprised ItW go shut out the main categories. im just happy for linney...she is great in the savages. well deserved.
This is the first time I can remember where the two best films of the year got the most nominations. Fucking great. Now I have to decide whether to root for PTA or the Coens. And Tommy Lee Jones? A shocker. And Burton got shut out. Amazing. And Reitman got in. Lots of great surprises this year, let's hope they continue.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Linney. She might even have a darkhorse chance to win.
ReplyDeleteBlood and No Country are the two heavyweights that will slug it out, of course. But the big winners are Juno and Michael Clayton will all their "major" noms.
GO MARION COTILLARD!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI´M SOOOO GLAD ANGELINA DIDN´T GET NOMINATED!!!
oh,
ReplyDeleteand go Viggo!
very happy that Once got a song nomination and Into the Wild got a score nom. very sad that Into the Wild got almost completely ignored. And most especially glad that Juno made the cut in Best Pic and Actress to silence all the haters.
ReplyDeleteTommy Lee Jones had an excellent year with In the Valley of Elah and No Country for Old Men. Knowing Daniel Day Lewis is the heavy favorit, I think the Academy went with nominating Jones, a veteran, over a younger actor like Gosling or Hirsch. The younger guys will have more chances, Jones may not.
ReplyDeleteI am glad the Academy went with some of its own nominations and didn't just follow what the globes and other award shows did.
Why was Jolie not nominated? Oh, let me count the ways. There was a lot of criticism that she was playing an African-American woman. Her picture, in spite of huge publicity, completely disappeared after release. And possibly they're as tired as we all are of reading about her? Naah, that's never hurt anybody in the past...
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised when Linney got the nod but i'm happy for her! I must say I was also shocked when Jolie didn't make the cut and Blanchett did for the lead category, and it's too bad for the Original score in 'There Will Be Blood' also....Surf's up? WOW! Did not see that one coming or the Make Up snub for Sweeney...
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled that Laura Linney was nominated. She was excellent in The Savages. Very pleased that Atonement and Ronan were nommed.
ReplyDeleteTommy Lee Jones was a pleasant surprise - he did excellent work this year. Reitman was definitely an unexpected director nomination. And I must say, I didn't expect so many nominations for There Will Be Blood, even though I loved the film. I just didn't think the Academy would go for it. Another pleasant surprise. :)
great to see a song from'once' nominated..a beautiful, simple little irish movie with a big heart..would love to see it win..
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention Viggo Mortensen! He finally got his first nomination - and well deserved. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter they announced Tommy Lee Jones I almost lost consciousness, lol! I predicted him...but in supporting for "No COuntry" ...didn't see him in the Lead coming at all!!!!!!
ReplyDeletereally shocking that sweeney todd was snubbed at the makeup category. also shocking (but i'm quite happy nonetheless) is that enchanted received three nods for song. i only expected two at most.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Norbit for make up and they ditched Sweeney Todd.Oh and Surf's Up is up for an award ?!But I didnt see Linney and Lee Jones coming.Reitman was definitely an unexpected director nomination as I expected Burton to be nominated. However, I am very pleased with the double nomination for Cate Blanchett .GO CATE !!
ReplyDeleteEnchanted is up for 3 songs! Hopefully Amy Adams will get to sing at least one
ReplyDeleteCome on people!! The acting noms for Linney and Jones? Surprising indeed but not altogether unforseeable. The BIGGEST surprise, but moreso a travesty, is Eddie Vedder not getting the nom for Guaranteed, or any of the ELEVEN songs he recorded!! I know original song is not the biggest category, but his snub is FAR AND BEYOND the worst.
ReplyDeleteNorbit? Lol!
ReplyDeletesurprised at :
ReplyDeleteJason Reitman's nom
Linney & Jones' nom
SURF'S UP?? where's bee movie/beowulf?!
and into the wild's exlusion from the major categories.
the fact that blanchett recieved two nominations makes her a 99.9% lock for Best Supporting Actress, although I find unfortunate do to Amy Ryan's breathtakingly tragic performance
ReplyDeleteAtonement is quite good, but i don't think that it'll be the winner next month. NCfOM is the most critical acclaimed film this year, and i will be very glad if it win. Another film that i like is There Will Be Blood. Juno and Clayton finally got the BP noms, but the truth is they're just list fillers.
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding? Juno has a lot of support, it's the feel-good film coming at a time when things in this country are turning to sh*t and Roger Ebert is pushing it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see something else win, but will not be surprised if Juno is the one that's announced for Best Picture at the end of the night.
totally totally totally bummed about Into The Wild. that should have been in there! I don't get it!
ReplyDeleteLAURA LINNEY....I LOVE YOU!!!! Congrats to an actress who deserves to finally win...I think she's got a legitimate shot.
ReplyDeleteNow, Cate shouldn't have gotten nominated for Best Actress...that spot shoulda gone to either Kiera or Amy.
As for director, the Academy missed this one. Reitman? Come on...I mean, Burton or Joe Wright had a much harder task than he or Gilroy had...
All in all, Oscar IS getting smarter (leaving Into the Wild out, for one)
