I only watched the first one, then thought I didn't want to lose anything from the experience of seeing the film in it's entirety so stopped. Robert Duvall is well concealed behind the makeup, but some of his idiosyncracies shone through - do we sense a nomination?
I watched all four clips, which I probably should not have done. Nonetheless, I think that Viggo was incredible in these handful of scenes, especially in the scene titles "Bad Guys". I actually thought that was the strongest scene out of this bunch.
The visual style is really perfectly fitted with the tone of the film, although it's much more handheld than I expected (not a bad thing).
The score is completely different from what I was expecting, and it's extremely intriguing for that reason.
While Robert Duvall showed a very different side in the short scene with him, I really can't say whether I like it yet or not.
As far as Oscar chances go, I think that the strongest possibility is for Viggo to get a nod, perhaps along with cinematography and maybe score.
Even though I'm definitely looking forward to this film, I don't think that it had much of a shot outside of those categories, even when taking the expansion to ten BP nominees into consideration.
By the way, if any of you don't want to have the film spoiled for you, I would suggest not watching the clip called "Never Killed a Man".
The film looks even more incredible than I had imagined. I think the film is going to have a very limited theatrical audience. It's an art-film, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Viggo Mortensen looks to be giving a career-best performance here and I definitely think he will be nominated, especially with how few contenders have emerged in the lead actor category. He may end up winning.
Here's a link to a piece that pretty well describes my feelings towards the film thus far.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of it yet, but it's still a fringe contender for me right now...
ReplyDeleteI watched 3 of the slips not the Never Killed a Man due to the spoiler warning but I'm loving it and Viggo in particular just looks incredible in it.
