Day 1 at Venice: Has 'The Road' gone off the Oscar path?

Perhaps. The Venice Film Festival has started and the early word on the film is mixed. Variety's review is rather negative, while In Contention isn't thrilled with it either. Time will tell if it's an afterthought in the race, but to say the least, it'll be an uphill battle from here.

Also making its debut is Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which Variety says in this review is just as odd and disjointed as you'd expect it to be.

Finally, Todd Solondz has returned with a new film, a pseudo sequel to Happiness called Life During Wartime. The short word on it from In Contention was positive enough, so it might be something to look for later this year or next.

-Thoughts on Day 1 from Venice?

  1. I'm hoping for a Basterds effect even though I knew I'd love it, it got incredibly mixed reaction out of Cannes which made me go "damn". Not because I was worried as I knew it'd be amazing no matter what, but cuz it jsut sucks when an amazing film doesn't do well critically. And most assumed it'd stay mixed but upon wide release reviews soared...now it holds an 88% so I'm hoping we get a similar effect here.

  2. I read Tapley's review over at InContention and he mentioned a lot of problems that I was worried about when I first heard about the film. I think Viggo's performance should still have some strong Oscar legs. I don't know if it'll be good enough for a nomination, but I bet he will be the high point for the film.

  3. Time will tell, I wouldn't count it out of the race or anything, but it could damaged to some degree today...

  4. Recalling my coments from when I saw the trailer to this, although it impressed me, and assuming the trailer did indeed reflect the entire film, I didn't feel it was going to be getting many noms for prestigious awards.
