Before you read this, please check out the Public Enemies trailer that Myles posted. It looks solid.
A friend sent me this article from Noah Forrest (MCN). I think we all can relate to some of his points. While reading his article, I just thought about the hundreds of comments I read over either defending the Dark Knight or bashing it. Or, the comments of Juno last year. Or with Wall-E this year. When fans get behind a film they defend it to the death. I'm certainly guilty of this. To this day, I've cursed one of my best friends for not enjoying No Country for Old Men as much as I did. I also genuinely despise people that don't like the Usual Suspects.
Here's a quote from the article:

Here's a quote from the article:
Every single movie in the history of cinema can be nitpicked and torn apart if you want to, but if it’s a really great movie there’s probably less of a chance that you will. Ultimately, some films “work” for you and some don’t and we’ll wind up defending those ones that worked and attacking the ones that didn’t. But for every film that didn’t work for you, there’s somebody out there who loved everything you hated. And if you’re anything like me, it’ll just make you hate it even more.
Anyone disagree (or agree) with Noah's analysis?
Ahem. Who was it who posted the Public Enemies trailer?
ReplyDeleteNice article btw. Very true.
My fault Myles. I assumed Joey for some reason. I changed it. I thought the article was spot on. I find myself arguing against movies simply because I think too many people like it. Fanboys destroyed the Dark Knight for me. I thought I was immune to hype until the Dark Knight. I absolutely loved the film after watching it once. But, after people said it was the greatest film ever made, I started to back off with the quickness. I started to point out all of the flaws just to reassure to myself that I hadn't seen the greatest film ever made.
ReplyDeletei'll always take credit, justly or not...lol
ReplyDeleteindeed though sir, it is annoying to be accosted by someone trying to convince you any film is the "best ever made" or that it's impossible not to like it.
Fact...every movie ever made has had someone watch it and get sexually aroused from it, they loved it so much...and every single film has also had a viewer that found it to be a piece of garbage.
as I like to say...to each their own...after all, if people didn't want to have opinions about movies and discuss them/see others as well..we'd be out of work
also...must confess...not a huge fan of The Usual Suspects, though I love Juno...so i ride both sides of the coin
ReplyDeleteI believe there is a difference between not liking a film and not being a huge fan. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of Juno, but I don't dislike the film. Disliking a film takes a different kind of thinking about movies. I think most reasonable movie fans would agree that the acting in Usual Suspects was quite good and the story (and how it was told) was rather inventive. OK not so much the story, but how it was told. It has also stood the test the time, and is considered a classic within its genre (neo-noir/crime thriller). Again, you may not be a Usual Suspect fanboy, but I'm pretty confident you don't dislike the film. Or, perhaps you do. Sorry for the rant.
ReplyDeleteThe Usual Suspects I respect for its inventiveness more than I like it as entertainment...along the same lines of No Country for Old Men, though I liked No Country more, just less than most...that being said, agreed, The Usual Suspects is not like on the level of Date Movie or The Crappening/Happening, so there's no active hatred
ReplyDeleteReasonable movie fans respect a film. I think my complaint is with people who active dislike movies simply because they don't get it or wasn't necessarily entertained. However, as Noah points out ,there a great level of subjectivity in movie watching. So one man's gem might be another woman's brick. That's the gift and the curse of movie watching.
