LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84.
Her son, Carl Gettleman, says the co-star of the TV show "The Golden Girls" died early Tuesday at home in Los Angeles. Gettleman says she suffered from advanced dementia.
The diminutive actress spent 40 years struggling for success before landing the role of a lifetime in 1985, playing the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on "The Golden Girls."
She was just 3 days shy of her 85th birthday on July 25.
Her film credits include a razzie-winning starring role in the 1992 Sylvester Stallone action-comedy STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT, supporting parts in MASK (1985) with Cher and Eric Stoltz, MANNEQUIN (1987) with Kim Cattrall and James Spader, and STUART LITTLE (1999) with Geena Davis and Michael J. Fox, as well as a bit part in TOOTSIE (1982).
