A Better Academy...

Hello Hello...Joey here...just pondering some Oscar related things and was wondering what you guys would do if you were able to make one change to the Academy Awards? Not replacing a nominee, but something having to do with the rules of presentation of the awards.

I think i'd lean towards seperating Best Pic into comedy and drama, or relax the oddball restrictions having to do with the Original Score and Song categories....that's just me though.

What do you guys think?

Lemme know how you would make the Oscars even better!

  1. I don´t like the way that the academy awards are usually almost always american awards. Sure they take place in the US, and sure the states have the most money to produce good films, but it always seems like the 'best pictures, actors, directos, screenplay writers' always come from the US. I disagree.

Sure we see Pan´s Labyrinth, Crouching Tiger, Life is Beautiful being nominated for some Oscars, but those are big, expensive, incredibly elaborated pictures, that very well have an all-american-style to them. I´d like to see more asian, african and south american movies (and actors) being honored as well.

So maybe the voting members should be broadened - to other continents, other professionals, and not consist solely on a small quantity of people - it looks to me like usually the same people are always nominated! That, in my opinion, would change the awards for the better.

  2. I think I would want to add a Best Ensemble Cast award and, as was mentioned in the original post bring back the Best Adapted Score award that they had back in the 70s that John Williams won for Fiddler on the Roof

  3. I like the idea of a Best Ensemble category, and in light of some critical snubs this year I'd definitely renovate the restrictions on Best Foreign Film and Original Score/Song.

  4. Ok, so people might actually start WATCHING the Oscars, I have a great idea...run the Oscars like an election. For instance, have the academy cast their votes on the day of the Oscars, and during the show, they'll show us the results of who won with such and such a percent. This would make it much more suspenseful. I don't get why it's such a big secret as to who place second. Let us know the order in which the academy voted!

  5. Hey, the comment above left me really curious to know who placed 2nd in a lot of cases! For example.. This is what I think for the past decade in the Actress category...

2000 - Annette Bening (American Beauty)
2001 - Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream)
2002 - Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom)
    2003 - Renee Zellwegger (Chicago)
    2004 - Diane Keaton (Something´s Gotta Give)
2005 - Annette Bening (Being Julia)
    2006 - Felicity Huffman (Transamerica)
2007 - Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada)
2008 - (just a prediction) Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) - unfortunately.

    What do you guys think?

  6. I agree. Actually, this list above looks more deserving than MOST of the actual winners. Go 2nd placers!

  7. "Go 2nd placers!"

1st is the worst, second is the best.

I would like to see a Best Ensemble award. A revamp of the Foreign Language/Documentary/Score rules. I would also like to see a best voice performance award but it would just turn into a popularity contest so I'm not too sure about it.

  8. I would do several things

Like the Golden Globes, separate Best Picture, Actor, and Actress all into Drama and Comedy/Musical, allowing great movies like Sweeney Todd (and all of Burton's films) to be rightfully recognized, and also allowing Johnny Depp to finally get his due.

Relax the strange restrictions on Original Score/Song, so we don't have another TWBB score issue happening. Everyone and the mom knows the score for TWBB was the best this year.

Bring back the adapted score category. Again, makes room for more musical (by musical I mean Sweeney Todd =P) love.

Give DDL his own category so as to make the Best Actor category less one-sided. lol

Give great foreign films like Pan's Labyrinth a chance at winning Best Picture. As far as I know, now foreign film has ever won best picture (though I could be wrong).

Best Ensemble Cast would be great too, allowing the cast of films like LOTR to get recognition.

  9. i think these are all great ideas....any of them would improve the show considerably

  10. I have to disagree with those who want Best Picture divided into drama and comedy/musical categories. I've always hated that the Golden Globes do it that way, since it cheapens the win considerably (and it says a lot if you can manage to cheapen the Golden Globes even further than they already are). It just goes against the whole idea of awarding "the best" in my mind, it doesn't seem fulfilling to have it basically narrowed down to a final two. Plus, if the Golden Globes have taught us anything, it's that half the nominees in the comedy/musical category aren't really comedies or musicals, considering past winners include Lost in Translation, Walk the Line, and Sideways, which I think would all fit more in the drama category.

I'm probably in the minority however in mostly being satisfied with the current Oscar format. There are some minor changes I'd make though, particularly in Best Foreign Film (which is a mess, and needs to be completely revamped, and the "one country, one film" rule needs to be tossed NOW), and the music categories, mostly to get around the Academy's anti-rock bias. But with the major awards, I'm pretty happy.

  11. My category suggestions as follows:

    Best Film - Dramatic
Best Film - Comedy or Musical

    Best Actor - Dramatic
Best Actor - Comedy or Musical

    Best Actress - Dramatic
Best Actress - Comedy or Musical

    Best Supporting Actor - Dramatic
Best Supporting Actor - Comedy or Musical

    Best Supporting Actress - Dramatic
Best Supporting Actress - Comedy or Musical

They need to fix up the mess they've made with the Original Score and Original Song categories. And I also wonder if the vocal performer of a Best Original Song nominee should be recognised as well?

They could certainly reintroduce Best Adapted Score.

  13. I agree with Sam's Club. I mean, the Globes are fun to watch and it's less formal so things can get wild, but it's not specific in its lead acting and motion picture categories. That's not such a big issue because it's quite boring to have the same person win the same (best actor/actress) award throughout the season. So the Globes really give a sense of variety and possibility.

But the Oscars should never follow such a system, in my opinion. It makes the honour less prestigious and puts the Academy at risk of being seen as indecisive (in a sense that they can't decide who really is best).

  14. Yes, an ensemble award would be fantastic. I've always thought the Academy should consider that. But I also thought that the introduction of such an award would make winning an Oscar easier for actors. It risks decreasing the prestige of having an Oscar (or even an oscar nomination, for that matter), especially if the one you received is not solely for your own performance, but also for that of everyone else's in the cast.

But if the Academy doesn't mind, then I say why stop at ensemble, the Best Picture award shouldn't just be given to producers, but everyone who contributed to the artistic element of the film.

  15. And what about an oscar for best stunts? I always thought the (essencial) work of stunt doubles is very much overlooked in hollywood...

  16. Breakthrough performance...so people like Sam Riley (Control) can get some love.

Ensemble would be a good add too.

  17. If the Oscars were separated into comedy or musical and drama, that would take over 70% off its suspense and fun. Most of the winners would turn SO obvious!

    For example this year -

    Daniel Day-Lewis
    Johnny Depp
    Julie Christie
    Marion Cotillard (no Page, sorry)

Plus there would be too many nominees! 10 actresses, 10 actors, plus supporting actors (and then obviously, it would only be fair if there were comedy or musical and drama categories for them too). The Oscars would be about 5 hours long, and this format would also take away from the shortlist´s weight and competitive 5 slots...

  18. I'd like to see awards given out for Best Casting and Best Stunt direction (both were rejected in 1999 bz the Academy on the weak grounds that they'd make the ceremony last too long).

Also, I believe that the Cinematography award should be split up into Best Cinematography and Best Lighting Design, as each of these two aspects of film shooting is equally important.
