Johnny Depp adds another film to his slate, and takes his wife along for the ride...

...as she will be starring in the film as well. Here's the story from Coming Soon:

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis will star in My American Dream, to be directed by Lasse Hallström . Depp and Paradis have been together for 12 years and have two kids. Hallström previously directed Depp in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Depp said that "Vanessa plays the French feminist Simone de Beauvoir and I play her lover Nelson Algren who is real macho." He's expected to make the film in 2011.

The actor is currently shooting The Tourist and will follow that thriller with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

About the fourth "Pirates" installment, Depp said: "In the earlier films there were so many subplots that the audience, and even I, was sometimes confused. The next part is fun, a lot of fun."

In related news, Hallström has reportedly replaced Tomas Alfredson in the director's chair for The Danish Girl as well. The sex-change drama stars Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Unfortunately it's another really poor week for DVD, but I press on nonetheless...

Despite another week of rather crappy releases, I've managed to sift through the waste and come up with a PICK OF THE WEEK, though I will be up front with saying that it's one of the weakest choices that I've ever had to go with. It's:
Bart Got a Room
This indie comedy is rather harmless and only average, except for a wild supporting role by William H. Macy as a wacky father of the protagonist. It's bizarre and often very funny, but take it from me, without his role, the movie would be a waste of time. See it for Macy's performance and enjoy that.
-The rest of the releases this week pretty much make me gag. The highest profile is Fast and Furious, which will likely be on my list of the worst films of the year. I never liked any of the movies in this franchise, but for some reason I liked this one even less. You know if it's for you, so if it's your thing, enjoy...it's simply not mine though (to make a pun, it did a fast job of making me furious...yes, I know that sucked). Moving on, we also have the "comedy" Miss March, though simply calling it a "Miss" is enough for me. Finally, we have Dragonball: Evolution, and I just kept waiting for this to evolve into something besides a piece of crap, but alas, it never managed to.
-Instead of making my normal multiple Vintage picks for a shitty week, I'm going to go back to only recommending one movie, but making it a lower profile one worth seeking out. It's an early Johnny Depp movie called Don Juan DeMarco, and it's simply a joy to watch. Depp and costar Marlon Brando (not phoning it in) have great chemistry, and it elevates this romantic comedy to something that's a mix of a shrink/patient flick and The Princess Bride. It's really rather great stuff.

Depp's "Rum Diary" gets another actor

According to this in The Hollywood Reporter:

Amaury Nolasco has joined the cast of "The Rum Diary," Bruce Robinson's adaptation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel.Johnny Depp toplines the movie, which began production this week in Puerto Rico. The cast also includes Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Rispoli.Nolasco plays Segurra, the son of the biggest cement-plant owner on the island."Diary" is the debut film of Infinitum Nihil, the production company headed by Depp and Christi Dembrowski.The film also is produced and fully financed by Graham King and his production company GK Films. Anthony Rhulen and Robert Kravis also are attached to produce.Nolasco, best known for TV's "Prison Break," has appeared in "Transformers" and "Max Payne" and next appears in "Armored," which comes out in the fall.

"Public Enemies" Trailer

Now available for your viewing pleasure is the trailer for Michael Mann's summer crime thriller, "Public Enemies":

-I like what I see here. Depp, Bale, Cotillard, and notably Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover look to be in top form. 

Can't help but wonder about the transposition of Mann's patented digital filmmaking in a more period setting. 

We shall see. Thoughts?

Is it just me or does the poster for Public Enemies remind you of another Christian Bale starring film?

Maybe I'm crazy, but they both sort of scream "duel" or at the very least "standoff" to me...opinions?

"Public Enemies" Gets a Neat Little Poster

Of interesting note is that Christian Bale seems to have been demoted as far as billing goes. Having his name after the title in the credits may imply that any Oscar push given to the film would put him in the supporting race. But perhaps I'm looking too far ahead.

Is This Our First Glimpse At Johnny Depp as A Certain Hatter of Some Sort?

If this turns out to be a real image from Tim Burton's upcoming interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, things are going to be very interesting (and weird).....what do you guys think of this?

Sweeney Todd: Our Buzz

Not being a diehard Broadway fan, Tim Burton's adaptation of the beloved horror-musical Sweeney Todd was a completely new experience for me as a viewer. My quick two-cents? Burton's essentials (top-notch artistic & technical values, dark humour, atmosphere) are all there and this time; thanks to the suitable theme and concept, Burton's creative choices are a perfect, if gimmicked fit for the source material and one of the film's biggest assets. Acting-wise, there's nothing much beyond Johnny Depp's A+ portrayal of the creepy title character (yet that could probably be enough to carry the film through the whole awards season).

Hopes for the Big Award should not go up so fast but I'd bet some money now on Depp's third nod.
