The MTV Movie Award nominations are announced...

...and they're as poor as you'd expect. Here's the story from The Hollywood Reporter:

Raunchy comedy "The Hangover" led nominations for the MTV Movie Awards, beating blockbusters "Avatar" and the "Twilight" vampire sequel "New Moon" into second place, MTV said on Wednesday.

But "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner dominated the contenders in the new global superstar category, while Betty White, 88, picked up a surprise mention in the usually youth-dominated awards.

"The Hangover" had six nominations, including best movie, best villain (Ken Jeong) and best comedic performance for actor Bradley Cooper.

"Avatar" -- the biggest grossing movie of all time -- and "New Moon" had five nominations apiece, followed by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and the Sandra Bullock comedy "The Proposal" with four each.

White, the former "Golden Girls" actress who has won new fans by playing on her age and contrasting her sweet matronly image with raunchy jokes, was nominated in the new "Best WTF Moment" for a dress fitting scene in "The Proposal" in which her character gets up close and personal with Bullock.

Bullock picked up nominations for best female performance for her Oscar-winning role in drama "The Blind Side", as well as best comedic performance for "The Proposal".

In the popular "Best Kiss" category, Stewart scored a double nomination for her smooch with "New Moon" co-star Robert Pattinson, and for a lesbian clinch with Dakota Fanning in "The Runaways". Lautner and his former girlfriend, country music singer Taylor Swift, are also competing for their kiss in "Valentine's Day".

The nominations were decided by fans, who will also choose the winners by voting online at MovieAwards.MTV.com from Wednesday until June 5.

A full list of nominations for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards can be found on the website and the golden popcorn statues will be handed out on June 6 in Los Angeles in a live TV ceremony hosted by "Parks and Recreation" actor and stand-up comedian Aziz Ansari.

It's even more acceptable to hate Transformers 2 now, since Shia LaBeouf did too!

Further cementing my argument that it's worst film of 2009, its star despises it about as much as I do. Via Worst Previews:

Speaking to FHM magazine, actor Shia LaBeouf admitted that he hated the second "Transformers" movie and agreed with Megan Fox that it was totally confusing.

"There are a lot of people that liked the second one, but I hated it. I just didn't enjoy it," he said. "I thought we missed the mark. I got confused, I couldn't see what the f*ck was going on, you know with certain robots... I couldn't decipher what was happening. There were storyline paths that I just wouldn't have gone down."

Despite his negative review, LaBeouf has faith in director Michael Bay and the rest of the team that the third installment will be a huge improvement.

He explained: "I know that directors Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are dedicated to making the best movie we possibly can, and we're not going to miss next time."

Too late, I know, but would Shutter Island have cracked the Best Picture list last year?

It's after the fact, but since it was originally a 2009 release, and a lot of people have said (not myself) that a number of the films were just "filler", it's interesting to think about how Scorsese's latest would have fared This article here from Cinematical goes into the idea of it in the current race (including how Leo would have done in the Best Actor category), and it's a solid read.

Can you feel the excitement? Just to do a sort of pre-show, the poll here on the blog revealed that 71% of voters feel that Avatar will lead the field in terms of nominations (Inglourious Basterds came in 2nd with 11%, then The Hurt Locker with 8%, and Up in the Air with 5%). It's also worth nothing that the supposedly "leaked nominations" are a hoax, so DON'T BELIEVE IT. Right now we're just counting down the hours, so use this as an open space for anything related to the Oscar nominations, which are imminent...

When we look back on 2009, what will be the movie we remember?

Essentially, what movie or movies will stand the test of time and either sum up the year or just be something that you keep coming back to? My guesses are that Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, and Up in the Air will fit in there, to one degree or another. I'd throw out (500) Days of Summer, District 9, and Star Trek too, with Paranormal Activity as a wild-card, much like The Blair Witch Project in the last decade.
