Hypothetically Speaking...

Let's suppose that Quantum of Solace is a critical hit. It receives a 90-94 percent on Rottentomatoes, and has a metacritic score between 80-85. Let's also suppose that it makes a ton of money. Somewhere along the lines of 500-600 million worldwide. Given the current status of the Dark Knight as a potential best picture nominee, would Quantum of Solace be afforded the same "potential best picture" treatment? Or, is this treatment only reserved for the Dark Knight?

  1. Although this would seem fair, I can not see Quantum of Solace having half as good of performances as displayed in The Dark Knight or a story that can compete with Nolan's. What it could possibly do is help Daniel Craig with Defiance? Guess we will see.

  2. I think it's very unlikely. Casino Royale was in a similair situation two years ago, and while it was a big hit with the BAFTAs, it was left cold at the Oscars, even for Best Original Song. Exposure for Craig will help, but I think this year can only handle one potential mega-hit Best Picture nominee.

  3. I think it will help Craig for Defiance. Not the other way around. Plus, a few early reviews have said that its very very very good, but just shy of great. The Dark Knight was a truly brilliant and genre-defying picture that should and will get a best picture nomination. Huge difference, IMO.

  4. While I think it will be a great film, it is the shortest Bond film yet, and Forster and Craig say it has more action then any other Bond movie also...this is going to be a nonstop action thriller where Dark Knight was a brilliatn character study crime thriller like Departed or Heat, Quantum is gonna be more like Bourne which is another great film but got no best pic attention so its gonna be too actiony to recieve any Oscar love which is a shame because Bourne Ultimatum placed as runner up on my best pic nominees last year( emaning what I thought deserved it) action films are overlooked too much :Die Hard should have won Best Picture in 88 in my opinion...

  5. It definitely could be. Especially with Marc Forster directing and Paul Haggis writing the script. These guys are highly acclaimed by the academy. If the film is great, it should be considered.

  6. There goes the hypothetical: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/quantum_of_solace/

I think everyone raised great points. But, in the future, what kind of doors will the Dark Knight open if it get nominated? I know there aren't any set criteria, but what would take for an action movie to receive a nod? Some people single out the story or acting performances. I agree with that, but does it require more? Does it have to make a ton of money? Does it have to be genre defining (very high standard)?

  7. What happened to the prediction updates that were going to occur by the end of last week?
