Nominations come in Pairs...

On his farewell article, Lee Hernandez looks at this year's films with 2 or more potential acting nominees:

"A nomination is unmistakably a singular term, but nominations (plural) sometimes come in pairs of 2's and 3's. 2006 offered 6 pairs of 2: Judie Dench & Cate Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal); Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Rinko Kikuchi & Adrianna Barraza (Babel), Jennifer Hudson & Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls), Abigail Breslin & Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), & Jackie Earl Haley & Kate Winslet (Little Children). In 2005, Brokeback Mountain, earned 3 nominations for Michelle Williams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, while North Country, & Capote served up 1 pair of 2 each. Like Brokeback, 2005's Million Dollar Baby, & The Aviator, earned 3 nominations a piece. It seems inevitable then, considering AMPAS' voting history, that this year they will vote for several actors from the same films, and consider them in pairs"

  1. Atonement definitely. It's at least getting two. And Michael Clayton.

  2. Atonement- Actor, Actress, Supporting Actress times two.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead- Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress.
There Will Be Blood- Actor, Supporting Actor
    The Savages- Actress, Supporting Actor

Is Lee leaving the igloo? That would be way sad.

  3. Tom,

I think your right about all of those, especially "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," and "Atonement." I'll still be here as a fan of the site (I started that way years ago), but I am starting my own site in December.

Thanks for your kind words, and keep up the good work on the site!

    Lee

  4. I second Tom's picks with the addition of the following:

Michael Clayton - Actor, Supporting Actor (maybe Supporting Actress but I think less likely than the two guys)

Best of luck with your new site, Lee.

  7. Margot at the Wedding has a chance since Kidman is getting raves (From Entertainment Weekly's Lisa S. who says in bold that Nicole Kidman IS a sensation...) and Leigh is going to get a nomination...Also Atonement will get Actor, Actress, and 2 Supporting Actresses...Juno can also get one for Garner and Page is a lock....

  8. didn't Lee say he was leaving before? why is he still here? no offense but I don't really like your ideas, there too outlandish for my taste. You said Meryl Streep would beat Helen Mirren for Christ sake. But good luck on your site.

Yes, I did. And Now, I left. With all due respect, who cares what you think? Certainly not me. Nice job staying anonymous.
