As Variety is reporting (full details to be posted soon)The Intl. Press Academy has announced the nominees for the 2007 Satellite Awards, which acknowledge achievements in film, television, DVD and new media. The 12th annual ceremony will be held Dec. 16 in Century City, with awards going out in 49 categories.
"The Lookout," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "Away From Her," "Eastern Promises," "No Country for Old Men" and "3:10 to Yuma" vie for the dramatic feature nod. In the comedy or musical feature category, nominees are "Hairspray," "Juno," "Shoot 'Em Up," "Lars and the Real Girl," "Knocked Up" and "Margot at the Wedding."
Nominated for director were Ang Lee ("Lust, Caution"), Oliver Dahan ("La Vie en rose"), David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"), Ethan and Joel Coen ("No Country for Old Men"), Sidney Lumet ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") and Sarah Polley ("Away From Her").
Actors nommed for perfs in a dramatic feature are Denzel Washington ("American Gangster"), Josh Brolin ("No Country for Old Men"), Christian Bale ("Rescue Dawn"), Viggo Mortensen ("Eastern Promises"), Frank Langella ("Starting Out in the Evening") and Tommy Lee Jones ("In the Valley of Elah"). Actresses nominated are Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), Angelina Jolie ("A Mighty Heart"), Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en rose"), Tilda Swinton ("Stephanie Daley"), Keira Knightley ("Atonement") and Laura Linney ("The Savages").
"Persepolis," "The Simpsons Movie," "The Golden Compass," "Ratatouille," "300" and "Beowulf" drew mentions for animated or mixed-media film.
On the TV side, dramatic series nominees are "The Riches," "Dexter," "Mad Men," "Friday Night Lights," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Brothers and Sisters." Comedy or musical nominees are "Ugly Betty," "Flight of the Conchords," "Extras," "Chuck," "Weeds" and "Pushing Daisies."

Woah, The Lookout is factoring much more prominently into the precursors than I'd have guessed. I think I also speak for Alison and Joey when I say that this is an exciting prospect.
ReplyDeleteI am really excited that Tilda Swinton got nominated for "Stephanie Daley"! This is a great movie that most people have not seen. The only film that I have seen this year that is better is "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". I really hope her performance, as well as Amber Tamblyn's, gains some traction during the precursors.

Denzel is a surprise. Where is Daniel Day Lewis? Josh Brolin is a nice surprise. He looks great in the trailer & maybe he's great but just getting overshadowed by Bardem's tour de force? Christian Bale for "Rescue Dawn," really? Langella is a lock for an Oscar nod this year. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that Tommy Lee Jones & Viggo are here! So, for the guys, glad about Jones, Viggo, Langella, and Brolin. Not glad about Washington and Bale.
ReplyDeleteThe women: Loved Jule Christie in Away From Her. Good for her. Loved Jolie in Heart. Linney, Knightley, and Cottilard are all great. Don't care for Swinton. I think this is our Best Actress lineup, almost. I think it'll be Linney, Cottilard, Christie, Knightley, and Adams. I really think it's EITHER Adams or Page, not both. What about you guys? Can they both get in? Or is it one or the other of them? I think if Adams and Page both get in, then it's bye bye Christie.

ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that this wonderful film is getting some attention. It would be hilarious (though very, very unlikely in this universe) if it snuck into one of the major races. But we know that's ridiculous.

ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, Lee, I am also pleased to see Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo in there. I'm hoping that this might at least push Jones for a lead actor Oscar nomination. And the Coens and No Country for Old Men!

ReplyDeleteActually, it appears as if they have seen TWBB, as it's been nominated for cinematography. I guess the movie (and DDL's character) wasn't their cup of tea.
