This is a call out to all the readers of this blog.....what is your favorite film(s) of the year so far? I ask because I was looking at my own list and while I still have a number of films that must still be seen (Into The Wild, Eastern Promises, etc) and plenty still not released yet (Juno, There Will Be Blood, etc) i've come to the conclusion that as great as some films have been this year, the flicks that have stayed most positive in my mind are less "PRESTIGE" pics and more just entertainment. The two movies that are fighting it out to be number 1 on my list at this moment are "Grindhouse" and "Knocked Up". Not exactly "Schindler's List", I know. That's why i'm asking to know what everyone has dug this year so far.
Is this your type of flick:
or maybe something more like this:
or maybe even something different like this:
I eagerly await hearing what you guys all like (and just for full disclosure, my top 5 films from last year were: 1. The Fountain 2. United 93 3. The Departed 4. Clerks II 5. Half Nelson)

Eastern Promises
The Lookout
Black Snake Moan

I know. It ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime. The list may change. This week I'm seeing No Country for Old Men AND I'm Not There. I think one or both of these will be bumping a couple out of my top 5.

ReplyDeleteMy Top 5 so far are:
ReplyDelete1. The Brave One
2. Knocked Up
3. Spider-Man 3
4. The Simpsons Movie
5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
alison- The Lookout is fantastic, and also on my top 10 list (i'm so glad someone else actually saw it, because I feel like the only one)...same goes for Death at a Funeral, though it is a bit lower on my list, more like 15 or so (and yes, i can go all the way to 25, so for anyone who thinks i'm agreeing with people just to agree, i'm not)....if i may ask (and if you even check this back), did you see it in the movies or only catch it on dvd? Same question for Death at a Funeral...just curious
ReplyDeleteBarry- awesome with the Knocked Up love!
Alison- also wanted to ask about Black Snake Moan lol but i think im starting to show preferential treatment..
ReplyDeleteHairspray is absolutely the best of the year, won by many noses...
ReplyDelete1. Atonement
ReplyDelete2. No Country For Old Men
3. Once
4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
5. Zodiac
Hi, Joey,
ReplyDeleteI saw The Lookout both in the theater and then again on DVD. Missed Black Snake Moan in the theater but saw it recently on DVD.
Death at a Funeral I saw in the theater.
And, now that I've just returned from seeing No Country for Old Men, I think I'm going to have to bump off Death at a Funeral and put this at the top. What a fantastic movie.
I left Zodiac off my list too, which I recently watched again on video. So many great movies this year.
1. No Country for Old Men
ReplyDelete2. Into the Wild
3. Grindhouse
4. Knocked Up
5. Zodiac
Runners Up
Waitress(no one?)
Eastern Promises
Bourne ultimatum (no one?)
3:10 to Yuma
Everyone is soo in love with ratatouille and i absolutely hate it. What's wrong with me?
donald- Hairspray was incredibly entertaining, no doubt about that
ReplyDeletecalvados- very nice list, nice variety
alison- I was the exact opposite, I was able to see Black Snake Moan in the movies (empty theater except for me, my grandfather, and 3 other people...such a shame) but only caught The Lookout on dvd (if it helps, i've seen it about 4 times already)
Death at a Funeral i saw in the movies (but i love english humor, so it wasn't a huge surprise...made a great double feature with the episodes of "Are You Being Served" on saturday nights)
I agree about Zodiac...seriously considering picking up the directors cut when it comes out on dvd
I hope to see No Country within the next day or two, so apparently i should prep for an update to the list....
Mr Tramp- You're list is one of my favorites so far, and to an extent i agree with you on that rat movie...not one of my favorites this year, but i didn't find it offensive. Nothing wrong with you though....that's what makes the world go round!
Joey and Alison, y'all are definitely not the only ones to see and love The Lookout. It just moved to #11 on my list (while I'm Not There entered at #8). Also, hurrah for all the Zodiac fans here (currently #7 for me, though it entered at #1 and stayed that way until I saw Eastern Promises).
ReplyDeleteMyles- you, me, and alison apparently should start form our own little "Lookout" group lol
ReplyDelete1. No Country for Old Men
ReplyDelete2. Juno
3. Atonement
4. Ratatouille
5. The Savages/Eastern Promises
daniel- I am looking foward to Juno more than any movie left this season (with the possible exception of Charlie Wilson's War, because I did read and love the script)...so that film may well end up high on my list....at the moment it looks like i'm gonna have a top 25 of the year lol
ReplyDeleteMy list will definitely be changing in the next few weeks as the "Oscar movies" get released:
ReplyDelete1. Sunshine--I happen to know I'm the only person that saw it because I sat in the theater all alone.
2. Hairspray
3. 3:10 to Yuma
4. Zodiac
5. Evening--Not the best movie by a long shot, but I had to include it since it co-starred my favorite actor.
