The big day is here!

It's Oscar night...any final thoughts on the year that was? We'll be getting up our final predictions and preparing to cover the event as best we can, but feel free to use this post as a forum for your Academy hopes, dreams, and fears....have at it!

  1. This was an incredibly topsy-turvy year, with a summer of great blockbusters (soo much better than 07's blockbusters minus Ratatouille and Hairspray) and a fall/winter that was...underwhelming.

I did love Milk, Benjamin Button, The Wrestler, Happy Go Lucky,Waltz with Bashir, The Visitor, I've Loved You So Long, Slumdog Millionaire, VCB, The Reader and Revolutionary Road plus a few others...but it pales so much compared to last year. Last year's Oscar nominees were also amazing, couldn't think of anything majorly snubbed (except maybe Into the Wild) while this year...well it could have been better, especially in the Lead Actress category.

2009 looks to be amazing at this point, and a few films have gotten great buzz. Can't wait for Los Abrazos Rotos, Watchmen, Shutter Island, Tree of Life, Taking Woodstock, Nine, 500 Days of Summer and Ponyo on a Cliff just to name a few.

oh and one more thing that i just found out and is making me really frustrated

apparently dish network (can't get cable where i live) is having a tussle with ABC, thus no ABC for me so i'm screwed, probably going to a friend's house (if i can at this point) but if anyone could tell me where i can watch the Oscars live online that would be great!

  2. Oscars 2009

What a fantastic award season it has been and it all comes to a rather dramatic end tonight with the much anticipated Academy awards. Myself and a group of close friends are preparing (Red Carpet and all) for our annual Oscar party. We live in Cape Town, South Africa, so the show is broadcast live at 03:00 am in the morning.

A few comments and thoughts regarding the 2009 season.
Firstly I am delighted you changed your prediction for Lead Actor from Langella to Rourke. Rourke delivered (Irrespective of the comeback story attached) the most real and sincere performance of the season. Who knew I would find myself relating to a bulked up, spray tanned, peroxide haired, has-been wrestler.

The academy has in the past 5 years rewarded performances based on real life characters such as Queen Elizabeth II, Ray Charles, Edith Piaf, Capote and Idi Amien. It is impossible to find fault in Langella’s performance as Richard Nixon however I would prefer seeing an original character being rewarded for a change.

When Rourke stumbles up the stairs to collect his gold statue and delivers the most colourful acceptance speech since Cuba Gooding Junior, he will be met with a standing ovation from his colleges and a resounding cheer from a house in Africa.

The most exciting category of the evening is definitely supporting actress. I do hope they put us out of our misery early on in the award show. The problem for me personally, is that I truly loved all 5 performances. I find it very difficult to pick a winner and there is little history in the award season to base a prediction on. I’m inclined to think that a Cruiz win would be the most sensational. Javier won last year in supporting actor category and there is history between him and Cruiz. If they have not changed the format of the show he would be presenting the award. So picture the Latino moment: Javier hands statue to Cruiz (awkward moment between ex lovers) and I have no doubt that Selma Hayak will be causing commotion somewhere in the crowd shouting hysterically in Spanish. That’s what the Oscars are all about! Love! Love! Love! Besides her performance was flawless and she deserves a statue.

BIGGEST UPSET OF THE NIGHT: If Kate Winslet does not win an Oscar I will be devasted. This category is such a mess. We have Meryl with 2 awards in her display cabinet and Angelina with an award which she has probably donated to an orphanage somewhere in Africa. We have Anne who is currently starring in Bride Wars which should have automatically disqualified her from being nominated for an Oscar, and who exactly is Melissa Leo? Which leaves us with the mighty Kate Winslet. 6 Nominations in her career thus far, a snub for Revolutionary Road and complete chaos surrounding the category in which she should be nominated. I am nervous!

Lastly, Best picture. It has been a while since I have enjoyed all 5 nominated pictures. This year I loved! They all deserve to be there and yes, Dark knight as well, but unfortunately there can be only 5. I am still not over Dreamgirls missing out or Reese Witherspoon winning gold but have learnt from that experience. Let it go! I wish they could reward 2 films this year with this honour as both Slumdog millionaire and Benjamin Button should be rewarded. When it comes to best picture I tend to consider every aspect of the film and in this regard I do feel Benjamin Button should win. You can not ignore the gripping story telling encompassed in Slumdog Millionaire (As well as the incredible hype this film has created) which is technically brilliant and no matter who you are the film finds a way into your heart. I’m ready for the Bollywood themed Oscar night celebrating the best of the season.

Thanks to Award circuit for the most compelling Oscar tracking available to the world. I have loved this season and remain a loyal fan to you and your work!
    Go Kate Winslet!

  3. My hopes for the Oscars winners . . .

Best Pic - Curious Case of Benjamin Button

    Best Director - David Fincher

Best Actor - Brad Pitt (Or Sean Penn for Milk if not Brad)

Best Actress - Kate Winslet (Or Meryl for Doubt if Kate doesn't get it)

Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger (Or Phillip Seymour Hoffman if by some strange occurence Heath doesn't win.)

Best Supporting Actress - Viola Davis

    Best Animated Film - Wall-E

    And that's that.

  4. I hoped Benjamin Button would win for picture but am now accepting the impending win from Slumdog good movie but the hype bothered me

Danny Boyle does deserve the directing nod although I would prefer if Van Sant or Fincher would take it

Kate Winslet will win her oscar simple as that although Anne Hathaway deserves it more.

I hope Mickey Rourke will win best actor instead of Sean Penn

Supporting actress should go to Cruz although Viola Davis will probably upset...

Supporting actor - Heath Ledger no question.

As for other categories I hope Wall-e and Benjamin Button take home some awards.

    Great year in the movies!
