Can Kathryn Bigelow Become the First Woman to Win Best Director?

. . . I'm not sure, but the Hurt Locker is a film that can make this year's Oscar ceremony historic. Here's an interview from Ropes of Silicon with Kathryn Bigelow. She deserves some recongnition for what she achieved with the Hurt Locker. It's a brilliant piece of film making.

  2. Visually, the film is stunning. I'm not completely sold on the writing yet. The acting was solid, but at times some of the performances were flat. I don't know the competition just yet, so I can't say if she'll break through.

  4. I would love for this to happen but I fear the Academy still isn't ready. The film isn't grandiose enough for their liking. It actual has substance and we know they prefer style over substance.

  5. The Academy is both the great unknown and frustratingly old fashioned, so it's definitely a strong possibility that she and the film will be shut out regardless of other factors

  6. I wasnt that impressed with this film at all especially in comparison to Greengrass' superior Green Zone...what was it you all like so much about it?

  7. I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything like that. In terms of the overall feel of the film, I thought she accurately captured what soldiers are going through in Iraq. There were almost no flaws in the editing. The pacing was fast, and it had the feeling of an intense video game. As I mentioned, I wasn't overwhelmed by the performances, but visually, it was a thing of beauty.

But, Joey's right. It's very possible that the film will be shut regardless, so I won't bet on her winning or even getting a nod.

  8. Ok personally ever since Jarhead which I thnk is a masterpiece most Soldier stories seem very mediocre to me, I thought it did have good performances and overall it was just a soldi film throughout with 1 or 2 great scenes but it was jsut underwhleming to me I guess...

  9. Andrew -

That's fair. I'm not completely sold on the acting. I thought, holistically, that the movie was solid from top to bottom. The acting and writing could have been stronger, but it's a beautiful film to watch.
