Today's Trailers: A Teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender, a Trailer for Miyazaki's Ponyo, and a Promo for HBO's The Pacific

The Last Airbender:

-A decent teaser, though Night's been in a freefall as of late...

Ponyo:

-Miyazaki being Miyazaki...

The Pacific:

-I just hope it reaches Band of Brothers quality...

-Thoughts on these trailers?

  2. Both trailers look Excellent. I'm especially surprised with 'The Last Airbender.' M. Night's last two movies were very lackluster, but I think he'll get back on track with this one, it's not Oscar Material, but it looks good as of yet. I also think he needs to start trying to do some adaptations instead of making his own stories for a while, but while not abandoning original stories completely, I feel that some of his plots could have been fantastic, but they felt as if he rushed through writing them.

  3. I agree that M. Night needs to take a break from his original material. I think he tries too hard because The Sixth Sense was such a hit. I think he is trying to recreate the same success instead of just working for a film. I disagree that 'The Last Airbender' looks good maybe it's because I expect the worst from M. Night and hopefully he will prove me wrong but he has been on a steady decline with each film getting worse than the next. I can't sit through another 'The Village' or 'The Lady in the Water' and I haven't seen it but I've heard 'The Happening' is his worst film yet.

I also don't think that Ponyo looks good at all. I know it got great reviews but I think I'm gonna stick with Pixar's Up, Nine, and The Princess and the Frog for the Best Animation category.

Call me pessimistic but neither of these films look entertaining to me.

  4. I know i'm probably guilty of a film critic crime here, but I don't like Miazaki's films...they look nice, like this one as well...but they just don't do it for me

  5. I didn't know it was possible to not like Miyazaki's films! jk. I love his work, I prefer his films to Pixar actually a quote from Ebert (about My Neighbor Totoro):

"Here is a children's film made for the world we should live in, rather than the one we occupy. A film with no villains. No fight scenes. No evil adults. No fighting between the two kids. No scary monsters. No darkness before the dawn. A world that is benign. A world where if you meet a strange towering creature in the forest, you curl up on its tummy and have a nap."

Totally agree. His films for children are far and away the best. And his more mature films like Princess Mononoke are breathtaking.

  6. Ponyo just looks okay as a film, I just like the trailer because it looks stunning visually. Miyazaki's work seems to get old with me, it's all about girl power and protecting the earth(not that any of those things are bad.) I totally respect him as a filmmaker though.

  7. i think coming from western societies people often misinterpret the reasoning of context in Miyazaki films, quite sad that more people need to be open minded.Id also add that Ghibli films never really bode well in trailers, unlike say Michael Bay films.
The Last Airbender looked good, but i'll hold proper judgement till next year. Shyamalan really needs this or else he's finished.

  8. Miyazaki is simply a great director which has brought us fantastic stories. He has nothing to envy Pixar's directors o Dreamworks.
I personnally like his style and i know that he is admired in Latin America as well as in Asia and Europe for his movies.

Avatar looks great for some tech awards. Hope to see the the long trailer soon.

  10. I respect your opinion, but it isn't that I don't view Miyazaki's films with an open mind, they have just lost their touch with me. But that is just me. As for The Last Airbender, I'm very curious to see if Dev Patel can keep the barrel rolling after the success of Slumdog, I personally hope so, he was such a delight to watch in that film.

  11. I'm not convinced about the new format, I think I like discussion to be focussed and thematic, but I'm sure I'll go either way.

I was really impressed with the Last Airbender trailer - it impressed me in that, while Night usually leaves a lot unsaid or unseen (the alien invasion in Signs and the "disaster" in The Happening) he is showing a lot here. I was not overly impressed until the shot panned out and we saw the attack. It intrigued me, to say the least.

The Pacific, if I recall, was filmed down here in Australia, in my home state of Victoria, down in Melbourne. Looks very good, but I am not an avid fan of war movies.
