The Early Buzz: The Kite Runner

There's something special going on in Marc Forster's captivating drama The Kite Runner and there are many subtleties in its powerful story that AMPAS could easily embrace...

"In a year were most of the films touted as Oscar contenders (even those competing for the Comedy/Musical spot on the Best Picture race) are too dark, too violent or both; Paramount Vantage’s spellbinding awards-hopeful The Kite Runner offers the kind of poignant storytelling and social relevance that AMPAS has effortlessly embraced in recent years"

  3. Sasha Stone at awardsdaily also gave it a good review.

See people you don't know A Listers to make a good movie. All the unknown actors have done really well especially the young ones.

  4. It's a shame. In an effort to protect the safety of the young actors in the movie, Kite Runner’s release date has been extended to December 14th. The film is an adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s book, also titled Kite Runner. Although the narrative is revered by many elites in the Afghanistan, the tale is far from circulated among the general population. Questions arise over a culturally inflammatory rape scene and whether simmering tensions between the two political sects – the Pashtun and the Hazara - could potentially boil over. Director, Marc Forster describes Kite Runner as “giving a voice and a face to people who’ve been voiceless and faceless for the last 30 years.” Thank you, Marc.

It's a shame that this film is causing such a ruckus for all the wrong reasons. It is a film, people. A labour of crafted art. A piece of expression. Why are there still cultures that are so myopic and ignorant that they cannot even entertain an opposing opinion? So instead or relishing in the execution of an impactful movie with an equally moving messaging, Paramount Vantage is forced to tiptoe around a potential political boiling over in Afghanistan and now must re-locate the young child stars of the film and their families. If anything is an example of cultural oppression in Afghanistan, it's this.

Aside from this mumbo-jumbo, you should check out the movie - Kite Runner Movie and read the book, too. Great message.

  6. Marc Forster is very good directing kids and this will probably help him get a Best Director nomination but I dunno about Best picture.
