What's Left for Best Picture?

Sasha Stone today posted a piece that is a very interesting read, basically summing up the state of the Best Pic race and saying it's down to the following films:
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Revolutionary Road
The Dark Knight
The Reader
Frost/Nixon
Doubt
Rachel Getting Married
Gran Torino
The Wrestler
-The entire article is worth reading, but this is what she sees it being left to now. My question to you guys is....do you agree?

  2. WALL-E is good enough, but it might be left out in the cold

  3. Benjamin Button
    Australia
    Revolutionary Road
    The Reader
    and Changeling

The academy loves eastwood, holocaust movies, adaptations from great books and epic romances.

  4. Wall-E is in my opinion, IMMENSELY overrated. Its fine, but the ending was a let down and the film was quite long.

  5. In fact, If I had my choice, I'd pick:

    Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    The Dark Knight*
    Defiance
    Doubt

  6. I must say, while the ending of WALL-E was different than I expected, it was by now means a letdown

  8. Looks accurate.

But Australia isn't doing incredibly well with the critics, at only 65% on Rottentomatoes, and unless that suddenly rises within the next week, Australia may have to kiss Best Pic goodbye.

Rachel Getting Married is not going to get anywhere close to amount of buzz needed.

Wall-E is NOT going to happen. Give it up. Yes, that would be awesome, but we need to just accept it as winning Best Animated Feature, and move on. Sorry to disappoint, but its simply not happening.

As of now, here's my Top 5 prediction

    The Dark Knight
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    The Wrestler
    Milk
    Slumdog Millionaire

    The 5 others would be

    Revolutionary Road
    Gran Torino
    The Reader
    Frost/Nixon
    Doubt

From what we know, The Dark Knight is pretty much a lock, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button just had a press screening that was said to have been VERY well-recieved. The Wrestler has been gaining a lot of momentum lately, and Milk has always been in there. Slumdog Millionaire had a lot of momentum for a couple of weeks, but that seems to have quieted down, but reviews are still very good.

From what I've heard, Revolutionary Road is a slight diappointment, and feels a bit uneven and while very good, is nto great. Gran Torino looks good, but we have yet to hear anything. Frost/Nixon is getting lots of good reviews, but most say that its way too long and uneven to really move beyond an acting showcase. Doubt suffers from the same thing, but though more consistent in pacing, is still mostly an acting showcase.

  10. Australia isn't doing well with the critics, at only 65% on Rottentomatoes? Rotten tomatoes is excrement...i hate that page...

  11. Actually, RottenTomatoes is a pretty good gauge IMO for how a film is going to turn out. Of course, there have always been films more liked by the public than critics, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, and several Best Picture winners, including Gladiator and Braveheart.

  12. Here's what I'm wistfully hoping for:

    Wall-E
    Doubt
    Revolutionary Road
    The Reader
    Rachel Getting Married

Roger Ebert is really pushing for Demme and Rachel Getting Married to both get nominated...he has a lot of power in the industry, you know...

  13. Benjamin button is a lock...

  14. Wall-E for best picture and best animated feature!

    For your consideration!

  15. Well it looks like Australia is out

Sitting in the mid to high 60s was one thing, but dipping below 60 is pretty much the kiss of death.
