We're just hours away from the OSCAR NOMINATIONS!!!

Can you feel the excitement? Just to do a sort of pre-show, the poll here on the blog revealed that 71% of voters feel that Avatar will lead the field in terms of nominations (Inglourious Basterds came in 2nd with 11%, then The Hurt Locker with 8%, and Up in the Air with 5%). It's also worth nothing that the supposedly "leaked nominations" are a hoax, so DON'T BELIEVE IT. Right now we're just counting down the hours, so use this as an open space for anything related to the Oscar nominations, which are imminent...

P.S.- ACCA Voting is open, so kill time till the nominations by casting your vote here. Make your voice heard!

  1. Let me preface these by saying I have yet to see :
    A Single Man
    The Road
    Nine
    Crazy Heart
    The Last Station
    The Blind Side

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS : predicted
Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air
    Mo'Nique - Precious
Julianne Moore - A Single Man
    Samantha Morton - The Messenger

Only the 1st 3 ladies here are what I would call locked. I am going against any of the women from nine although Cruz or Cotillard could get in. Perhaps Gyllenhaal rides in on Bridges' coattails as well.

    If I had my way:
Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air
    Melanie Laurent - Inglourious Basterds
    Bailee Madison - Brothers
    Mo'Nique - Precious

I love the Messenger, but Morton just didn't do enough for me. Laurent deserves to be here, but has campaigned to go lead (which she won't get). The person who should WIN this category sadly won't even be nominated. Madison the 12 year old daughter from Brothers gave what was easily the best female performance of the year.

    BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR : predicted
    Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Anthony Mackie - The Hurt Locker
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
    Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

Again, just Tucci, Waltz, and Plummer are pretty much for sure. I think Woody's gonna get in here as I expect a late surge in The Messenger's popularity. I am going WAY against the media in picking Mackie. I just think he's gonna get in, especially since I think Renner is going to miss out on Best Actor. I keep thinking Mark Wahlberg in the Departed out of the blue. Mackie has missed all the major precursors, so it's a risky choice. Much more likely are Matt Damon for Invictus or Alfred Molina for An Education.

    If I had my way:
    August Diehl - Inglourious Basterds
Jackie Earle Hayley - The Watchmen
    Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
    Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

The tavern scene is still one of the most memorable from Basterds, and August Diehl as the german senior officer that becomes wise to Kruger's plan absolutely owns it. If not for Waltz, he'd be much more memorable. Haley also gave one of the best performances from the first half of the year, and I still think it stands as one of the top 5 (just). Tucci is the best he's ever been, as is Woody, but it's Waltz here all the way, and I agree.

  2. BEST ACTRESS : predicted
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
Helen Mirren - The Last Station
    Carey Mulligan - An Education
    Gabourey Sidibe - Precious
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia

Nothing too exciting here. Perhaps Emily Blunt could get in (but I doubt it). I think these are a safe 5.

    If I had my way:
    Carey Mulligan - An Education
Evan Rachel Wood - Whatever Works
Saiorse Ronan - The Lovely Bones
    Zoe Saldana - Avatar
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia

Streep and Mulligan are incredible, and make their movies far better than they should be. Nobody mentions Wood, who is awesome in Woody Allen's latest. A lot of controversy over Saldana's motion capture performance and whether it is worthy ... I think it is. Ronan suffers from the Lovely Bones backlash and will likely be ignored, even though she shouldn't be.

    BEST ACTOR : predicted
    Jeff Bridges : Crazy Heart
George Clooney : Up in the Air
Colin Firth : A Single Man
    Ben Foster : The Messenger
    Morgan Freeman : Invictus

Again, I think the Messenger is going to make a run and Foster will shock the community here. I think Renner will miss here, although that is the much safer bet. Freeman is not a lock either ... haven't heard any mention Invictus in a long time and it might just barely make the best picture cut. Viggo Mortenson as a potential dark horse as he does have his support from those that loved The Road.

    If I had my way:
    Sharlto Copley : District 9
    Ben Foster : The Messenger
Joseph Gordon Levitt : (500) Days of Summer
    Liam Neeson : Taken
Michael Sturbarg : A Serious Man

Well ... for the first year ever I am probably going to disagree with most of these nominees. Again, I haven't seen Crazy Heart, but I expect to love Bridges as always. Clooney and Renner are both good, but not good enough for me. Freeman is excellent, but doesn't crack my top 5 either. Copley was incredible. Absolutely amazing in District 9. Levitt and Foster are the hearts of the best two movies of the year and deserve in. Sturbarg was hysterical. Neeson turned a cliche popcorn flick into something much more. These should be the top 5.

    BEST DIRECTOR : predicted
Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
    James Cameron - Avatar
    Lee Daniels - Precious
Jason Reitman - Up in the Air
    Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds

Going to be interesting as this is the first year 5 directors are going to get the snub after getting a Picture nomination.

    If I had my way:
    Neil Blomkamp - District 9
Joel and Ethan Coen - A Serious Man
Spike Jonze - Where The Wild Things Are
    Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds
Marc Webb - (500) Days of Summer

Tarantino is up for sure. The other 4 are actually in the running (although would be a shock). I would ADORE to see any of these other 4 nominated. Not only are these 5 all in my top 10 of the year ... it is the direction that has stuck with me as much as the acting.

    BEST PICTURE : predicted
    An Education
    Avatar
    District 9
    The Hurt Locker
    Inglourious Basterds
    Invictus
    Precious
    A Serious Man
    Up
    Up in the Air

Nine, The Messenger, (500) Days of Summer, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Hangover, Star Trek .... AHHHH ... this is so hard to call because it's the first year. The could get creative (and God I hope they do) ... but I am going to go with these 10.

    If I had my way:
    (500) Days of Summer
    Avatar
    District 9
    Fantastic Mr. Fox
    The Hangover
    Inglourious Basterds
    The Messenger
    A Serious Man
    The Watchmen
    Where The Wild Things Are

My ten favorite films of the year. Only the Watchmen has no chance of being nominated. The other 9 are all in the running. Could be a great morning :)

Well, if you actually read all of that, I appreciate the time.
