Armond White gets himself banned from an early screening of 'Greenberg'...

...supposedly because he's been vocally aggressive towards writer/director Noah Baumbach as a person (besides hating his films). It's a bizarre thing, and the whole article can be found here, but I wanted to see what everyone thinks of this. I'm always careful to be respectful of filmmakers, but does a lack of respect warrant this? I'm not sure (I'll write more in the comments section)...
-Thoughts?

BFCA Predictions and Announcement

In a few hours, the Broadcast Film Critics Association will announce their nominees with some new categories added. The organization has been doing ten Best Picture nominees for years now, so it will crucial as ever to see what films they choose. Their top ten rated films of this year are:
100 – Me and Orson Welles
100 – Up
97 – Up in the Air

1 ) The Princess and the Frog
2 ) Up
3 ) Fantastic Mr. Fox
4 ) The Hurt Locker

10 ) Thirst

David Denby of The New Yorker:

and Anthony Lane of The New Yorker (yes, he only picks 9):

  • Coraline
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Gommorrah
  • Star Trek
  • The White Ribbon
  • Up
  • Up In The Air
-Thoughts on the lists so far?

November 24, 2009

The first words on 'The Lovely Bones' (and a new Poster) begin to emerge...

...and the word is mixed, right now. Keep in mind that it's still very early, but with some people raving (here is one example), but also some people not caring for it at all (a review from Variety, found here). What's the verdict going to be? We'll know for sure soon, but right now it's too early to tell if this will be a critical hit or miss.
-Thoughts?

Using the Broadcast Film Critics Association as a Best Picture Barometer...

Awards Daily posted that graph a few days ago, and it's interesting enough for me to want to post as well. These are a decent smattering of the highly praised films so far this year, and of this group, we might see as many as 5 get a Best Picture nominee (though that's a real stretch, but who knows at this point).
-Which BFCA top picks do you think will go far this year?

A "Curious Case" Indeed...

Hey all, now that everyone has had a chance to (hopefully) see Benjamin Button I figured I'd finally break my silence on the flick. Benjamin Button is at turns a borderline masterpeice and also a majorly flawed film. Much of the success of the film is due to director David Fincher crafting a visually interesting film and Brad Pitt giving one of his best performances. The flaws mainly are in terms of the length (essentially it's a brilliant 2 hour movie that lasts almost 3), the script, which is like by the scribe of Forrest Gump and at times wants really hard to be that way, and the framing device involving Hurricane Katrina...my full review will be up soon, but suffice to say, it's far from a perfect film, but it's definitely in the talk for Best Picture.
