Some critics begin putting out their top 10 lists...

It's a little early in my eyes, but here they are anyway:

Time Magazine's Richard Corliss:
1 ) The Princess and the Frog
2 ) Up
3 ) Fantastic Mr. Fox
4 ) The Hurt Locker
5 ) Up in the Air
6 ) The White Ribbon
7 ) A Single Man
8 ) Of Time and the City
9 ) District 9
10 ) Thirst

David Denby of The New Yorker:
  • Adventureland
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Funny People
  • Me And Orson Welles
  • The Hurt Locker
  • The Last Station
  • The Messenger
  • The White Ribbon
  • Up
  • Up In The Air
and Anthony Lane of The New Yorker (yes, he only picks 9):
  • Anvil
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
  • Coraline
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Gommorrah
  • Star Trek
  • The White Ribbon
  • Up
  • Up In The Air
-Thoughts on the lists so far?

  1. I'm happy to see Funny People and Adventureland show up, two films in contention for my top 10 list that won't be on many lists, I think...

  2. these might not be my first picks, though some are, but i absolutely respect lists that rent trying to mirror the best picture list, and these look like personal choices, good for them

  3. Indeed, it's always when it's a true reflection of what you enjoyed most in a year. My list is ever evolving, and I'm fairly confident that when it comes out next month it'll be 10 films that I liked more than anything else this year, regardless of their Oscar prospects...

  5. I think you want to keep an eye on the LA film critics, they gave Best Picture to WALL-E last year, so it'll be interesting to see if they follow suite with Up...

  6. Man, they really love their animated/mixed media films.

I thought the first half hour of UP was amazing, but then it fell apart for me.

  7. I'm glad to see some love for Adventureland, a movie I enjoyed immensely. Also, I love that so many animated films are showing up on top ten lists this year.

  10. I don't think Corliss is much of a fan of animated movies. If only he made it clear by, i don't know, giving his top three slots to animated movies.

  11. Im glad to see Adventureland as well--such a shame that it's not getting the recognition it deserves. Personally, I blame it on the marketing campaign.

Overall these lists seem to be pretty much a mixed bag--with a lot of supposed heavy-hitters (The Lovely Bones, Nine, Inglourious Basterds) missing.

    Interesting, to say the least.

  12. Indeed, it should have been a bigger hit.
