Ricky Gervais, 2009 Oscar Host?

There's chatter floating around the internet that Ricky Gervais might be this year's Oscar host. I'm not sure about you, but if this is true, it's great news! I've been a fan of Gervais' since the Office, and he is exceptionally brilliant in Extras. I'm not sure if American audiences will appreciate his humor, but he is truly a comedic genius.

Check out Ricky Gervais with Patrick Stewart on Extras (classic stuff):

  1. i think they should use someone known and popular with the american audience to boost up their numbers, though i'm rooting for Garvais.

  2. I would be legit thrilled if this were to happen. Gervais is one of my favorite entertainers, and I think he would do a smashing job.

Also, just a thought to throw out there, but I've been of the opinion ever since his Golden Globe win that Sacha Baron Cohen would be spectacular as a host of the Oscars. Thoughts?

  3. Cohen wouldn't be a bad idea. He is definitely more popular among American audiences, but do you think people will primarily expect 'Borat' as opposed to Cohen? American audiences are incredibly narrow in terms of comedy choices. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it could sink the chances of any person who does not fit in.

  4. Gervais would be an excellent choice (his bit at the Emmys was the highlight of the evening), but I am afraid that he'd be too much of a risk for the producers wishing to grab a larger audience. Too bad, because Gervais would be marvelous.
