Well, Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times sure is, and he writes about it in this article:
-Yes, 150 minutes is very long for a comedy, but as someone who has read the script (and will have a review of the script coming soon), it only affirms that Apatow has been able to tell the story that he set out to tell, and if all turns out well, this will be by far his best film. Plenty could change from the script I read to the film we'll see in theaters, but if all remains the same, it should be something special.
-Time will tell, but what do you think? Can any comedy work at 2 and a half hours long?

I was going to get to see this but unfortunately they wouldn't let me in because I am a film major and have too much knowledge and so my opinion was worthless to them, my friend saw it though and he said he can tell Apatow was basically just trying to make like a comedy epic, and he really liked it but thought it was the worst of the 3 apatow movies...hes not a huge sandler fan though...if you live in LA I know there have been at least 4 screenings of it the past couple months so keep a look out.

I think it should be "Funny People".
ReplyDeleteJudd Apatow has right actors in hand and he is able to write smart stories with good character arc focus.
Adam Sandler could be amazing if the plot is strong enough. (Punch Drunk Love is a masterpiece!) With Seth Rogen and Eric Bana, nothing can go wrong too.
Also, look from the trailer, "Funny People" is more like a drama than comedy. I do hope it can become a great hit and success. People are even saying now Adam Sandler may have had an Oscar-worthy performance. High expectations and we only know till summer. ^^

ReplyDeleteUnless there is a huge twist I feel like I was able to get the gist of the movie in the couple minute trailer rather than paying $10 for a two and a half hour movie. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like the trailer gave a lot away on the plot, which make me kind of not want to see it.

I could have done without them revealing that he's recovering, but it's not the absolute crux of the story...believe me, the trailer is not a complete overview
ReplyDeleteI, like Andrew, was also not admitted to the screening for the same reasons.
ReplyDeleteHowever, people tend to forget about "epic" comedies released in the past, like "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" or "The Great Race", both of which run close to three hours in length.
As long as the story works for such a long length, I don't see the trouble behind such a runtime.
