Trailer for Sherlock Holmes

While I think we can more or less eliminate this from Oscar contention, it seems like it could be a lot of fun and do rather well at the Box Office...what do you think?

  2. Looks like a blast. I will definitely be seeing this. I got a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe form it, which is always a good thing in my book, as I love those movies to death (yes I love all three of them, sue me).

Still haven't had my question answered. Why does Clayton hate Danny Gokey? :P

  6. Downey Jr. keeps acting as if all his characters were the same...

This movie could go for a best costume design or art direction nomination, nothing beyond that sincerely. And I actually think those categories will find much more deserving proyects to honour.

  7. If Downey pulls a Jack Sparrow type performance, he might land a surprise nomination, but this looks like a artistic and tech one at best. Still really looking forward to it. As I said before, real good Pirates of the Caribbean vibe, which is something that's been lacking lately in some blockbusters.

Ritchie always said this was gonna be an action hero version of Sherlock Holmes, so I don't really know wy it was on the oscar radar lol.

  8. Well, the thing is, I don't want to like this because I don't particularly like Guy Ritchie, and I rather feel his shown an extended lack of imagination in constantly making movies about the same people. Having said that, this does look entertaining, and both Law and Downey Jnr. can be trusted to be entertaining. However, I get the feeling from the trailer that Mr Ritchie has rather whored himself to a big budget popcorn film quite like Van Helsing, in that the film will be far removed from the origins of the character as Stephen Sommers did with Bram Stoker's character. Yes, it does have a pirates feel to it, which could just be the trailer, but is more probably the result of director and producers trying to cash in on the success of period films made into action films. With an English accent I feel I must add, this one looks like a jolly good ol' romp though!

  9. Guy Ritchie has absolutely zero talent...he really needs to find a new profession. Arthur Conan Doyle would be rolling in his grave. How dare he take one of the greatest books of all time and undermine it by making it into a stupid action flick.

  10. Do you understand, Jordan, that it is in extremely bad taste to a call a movie "stupid" when not a soul on Earth has seen it yet?

  11. We could be seeing the makings of another Downey Jr. driven franchise. And I won't mind a bit! There are alot of great stories in this universe, and if they find the right combo of creepy atmosphere and british humor, I'm all for it!

  12. Hmmmmm. I definitely agree that it has no Oscar potential. I'm sure the cast will entertain as always. So far though, I have to admit that I'm not sold. I love Guy Ritchie, but I'm not entirely sure his approach fits here (the slow motion brawl, ripped directly from Snatch, made me grimace). It gives off the impression of forcing an action movie out of a material that doesn't quite demand it. I'll agree that there's a Pirates vibe, for better or worse. Though with the exception of the big hammer vs little hammer bit, most of the humor as presented fell flat, or gave off that feeling of a line engineered by committee to look "cool".
I'm still as intrigued as ever, and Downey is always entertaining (though his accent seems questionable at times), but I have mixed reservations so far.
