What are some bad movies that had good trailers to tease us?

Well, Cinematic has a very interesting article here, and they mention movies like Dreamcatcher and the remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Godzilla, but I thought I'd let you all do the honors and tell me what films would qualify as this for you. In my case, two examples I would go with from last year would be Sherlock Holmes and A Serious Man (though I know I'm in the vast minority there).

  1. There are lots of other examples, I'm just blanking right now.

  2. "Terminator Salvation" and "Public Enemies" are two of the big ones for me. I didn't exactly hate either movie, but the trailers promised a certain epicness that was never delivered. "Transformers 2" also had a pretty great trailer, even when the film itself turned out to be a spunk-flavored popsicle. Oh, and "Wolverine", because I never miss an opportunity to trash that pitiful excuse for a movie.

  3. A lot of horror movies have really awesome and fun trailers and then end up with terrible movies. To name a few... The Unborn, Black Christmas, The Hitcher, The Happening, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

There are also some trailers that don't translate naritively the same in the final product. The trailer for Where the Wild Things Are moved me to tears, to be honest, but the film didn't have the same effect although I still greatly enjoyed it.

  4. The Ring Two is one of the silliest horror films I've ever seen, yet its teaser trailer is incredible.

  5. I'll throw in the Coens' remake of The Ladykillers. That trailer made the film seem really funny but that was about all the fun bits in that film, still one of their worst in my opinion.

  6. Agreed with Josh regarding "The Ladykillers". Definitely the nadir of their career thus far.

Also agreed with Paul in terms of horror movies. The "Nightmare on Elm Street" teaser in particular promised a movie far more engaging than what we got.

  7. Pearl Harbor
I almost was about to take Michael Bay slightly serious

    Max Payne
Watch it, the official trailer is very badass with the Maralyn Manson song pulsing with some great visuals and it looked like we were about to have a memorably video game adaptation on our hands, guess not.

    Across the Universe
The trailer even promised that the movie would be groundbreaking, exhilirating, and spectacular. Way to back out on a promise in return we got artistic self indulgence to the max. Really it's one of the worst films I have ever seen.

    World Trade Center
One of those trailers that actually moves you, I may have even seen people crying to the trailer. But it was nothing but Hollywood tackiness

    The Da Vinci Code
Do I really need to explain this one. It's always fun when your lead actor really dramatically says "I need to get to a library" as if he may be in the pre-credits scene of CSI: Miami

    Hitman
Ave Maria is played on perfectly set to some great visuals (maybe this is where Max Payne got some inspiration for its trailer)

    Pirates 2 + 3
The first was great, especially after Depp's Oscar nod for the movie. There was seriously just something missing from the next two. Dead Man's Chest really just built more plot and confusion on top of itself over and over again, then ended with no resolution. At World's End just kinda answered our questions while meandering around with not a whole lot of action until the end, even then the movie ended with the promise of a sequel. But when it came to those trailers there was just something about that epic music and fast pace that makes you think it's gonna be good. I guess not.

    and last but not least
    Indiana Jones 4
It was the return of Indie, and the trailer really got my excitment high. All I'm gonna say is "Really?! F***ing Aliens?!"
this movie also has the worst line in a movie
    "Where'd they go space?"
    "No, the space between spaces"

  8. Ben- I have to disagree about World Trade Center, but that's just me.

  9. I thought Waterworld (1995) was a pretty pathetic attempt at an epic film -- but it had so much potential. Whatever the original intent was, it all got lost through the enormous production problems they faced.

However, that being said, the teaser trailer to it is pretty fantastically done. When watching it, I can't help but wonder if they just had a script to work with, and a different director and actors on the project, if it could've been different.

I still think an excellent film lies somewhere in Waterworld -- in the very basic concept of the setting, design, and perhaps story.

  11. I know I'm a little late to the party, here, but I just remembered another teaser that was beautiful, vibrant and poetic - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The movie, it turned out, failed almost across the board.

  12. Matt- It never did much for me, but I know what you mean.

  13. Robert- I still disagree about Benjamin Button, but that's your prerogative.

  14. In general, teasers fall into this category for me. Think 'Bee Movie'...
