Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There

  1. I think that the predictions are pretty set by now, however, here are some potential upsets that could occur.

There Will Be Blood could end up winning Best Picture, Director, and Adapted screenplay, but when you're up against No Country for Old Men (which has won every top guild award ever), there's not much hope.

Julian Schnabel could upset and win Best Director, but again, when the director's guild doesn't support the lone director, it's not a good thing for that lone director.

Julie Christie and Marion Cotillard could end up splitting votes and allow Ellen Page to become one of the youngest actresses to ever win Best Actress. Hey, the academy likes to award younger actresses nowadays (with the exception of Helen Mirren) so it's not that unlikely.

The ever-changing supporting actress category could shift front runners again and allow Ruby Dee to win, or even Amy Ryan. My money is on Cate Blanchett, but she already has an Oscar in the same category.

However, I think the biggest and most probable upset could come in the Best Actor category. Because everyone crowned Daniel Day Lewis as the guaranteed winner before anyone even saw There Will Be Blood, and because he's already won an Oscar, he might not be the front runner everyone thinks he is. In fact, my money says that a certain Demon Barber could slice his way to victory. Johnny Depp has solidified his status as one of the most talented, versatile, and respected actors of all time, and being the biggest box office draw of the year twice in a row doesn't hurt either. Hell, it took Depp doing a huge blockbuster like Pirates of the Caribbean to prove to the academy that he wasn't box office poison after all. Also, the fact that he was nominated for an Oscar, but not a SAG award raises a few questions. He must have impressed the actors of the academy so much that they dismissed Ryan Gosling and Emile Hirsch in favor of Depp. The academy is dying to finally award him and I think that while Daniel Day Lewis is certainly more secure in his status as front runner, Depp has scored almost as many nominations as Daniel Day Lewis (3 for Depp, 4 for DDL) and managed to score a nomination for the film that didn't get a best picture nomination. From what I've seen in the past few years, the academy tends to favor the actors whose films are not nominated for best picture or don't win best picture. Why? Because the performance is so powerful that it overshadows everything else (except the visuals in Sweeney Todd's case). Plus, one should also note that this is the first time Depp has been nominated for a role in a Tim Burton film. Like I said, they actors of the academy must have been so impressed with Depp that they were willing to nominate him instead of sticking to the nominee list from the SAG awards. That says something about how much they respect Depp and recognized that he gave such a unique and powerful performance in the film. Again, call me foolish, but I think Depp is going to give DDL a serious run for his money, though I wont get my hopes up too much, as I don't want to be too disappointed if things don't turn out this way.

  2. I also think Ellen Page could upset, but it may just be that I want her to, so it is not very likely.

  3. I don't think Ellen page doesn't win so easily... Not for her age, it's for the role (Very comic for tghe Academy) Wich is the last full comic female perfomance who won the Oscar? Diane Keaton in "annie Hall" thirty years ago. The Academy likes the dramedies (Mix of comedy and Drama)... Frances McDormand, Helen Hunt and Gwyneth Paltrow are good examples, and with Oscarish roles in front of her... An Alzheimer victim and an iconic french singer. I'm sorry but I don't think her victory is so easy. My predictions:

    -Marion Cotillard
    -Julie Christie
    -Ellen page
    -Laura Linney
    -Cate Blanchett

  7. Their is no one else in the Best Actress category that deserves the Oscar more than Marion Cotillard, she is amazing in the role. I have seen all of the movies that star the five nominees and no one comes close to the brilliance of Marion Cotillards portrait of Edith Piaf. She is perfect, it is a flawless performance. Although I do think that Julie Christie and Ellen Page deliver great performances I do not think that they are better than Marion Cotillards.
As for directing, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly's director Julian Schnabel, did an amazing job directing the film. It was some of the most stunning scenes that I have seen in a movie, he used every seen to add to the overall story. It was very original and in my opinion superior to that of The Coen brothers in No Country for Old Men.
Actor- Daniel Day-Lewis does an amazing job, I really believe that he is that person. When I see him do an interview it makes me think back to the great job that he does in Their Will be Blood. But I also like Johnny Depp's performance in Sweeney Todd. He shows that he is very versatile and can do no bad on film. He plays that role to perfection.
Picture- I really do believe that No Country for Old Men is the best film in this category. The only one that comes close is Juno, but Juno is just not a film that the academy would award their highest honor. So that leads me to believe that No Country for Old men Will win Best Picture.

  8. Yes! I´m so happy to read these comments and see that people actually agree with me! Marion Cotillard did deliver the BEST performance of the year, and she deserves an Oscar more than anyone. I do believe, unfortunately, that Julie Christie will win, being that she is a 'legend' and is in an 'english-speaking' role. One way or another, with Oscar or without Oscar, it was such a joy to observe Cotillard´s performance; one that will be forever one of the most memorable and enchanting performances in film history.
