-Quick thoughts....Tom Cruise, wow...snubs for The Dark Knight and Milk....and finally we see Sam Mendes show up to play....your thoughts?
Generally in agreement although I'm sickened that Frances McDormand got a Best Actress nom! Awful woman.
ReplyDeleteGlad for Kate and RR. But unsure about Tom Cruise and James Franco. And I was surprised to see The Reader in place of Dark Knight for Best Pic.
Also I've just seen a whole load of drama on another blog about the lack of black actors/actresses on the list. Just Viola Davis I think. Hmm...
Once again, The Golden Globes never fail to disappoint. Each year they amaze me at how horrible their nominations are.
ReplyDeleteWhattttttttttttt?!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo Changeling, Wall-E or TDK for Best Picture??
Tom cruise nominated! jaja
What!!!?? No Milk for Best Picture! ??No TDK, Wall-E, Torino or Changeling...Revolutionary Road is alive???
ReplyDeleteEastwood was totally snubbed for acting...and Brad pitt enters...
And Tom Cruise for Supporting role is ridiculus! Malcovich was great in his supporting role in Changeling and Josh Brolin even better!
Someone can explain me this nominations? This year is really strange...
Dude what did Frances McDormand ever do to you?
ReplyDeleteMilk is still in the Best Picture race obviously, inclined to think RR is now too. TDK may be fading, profoundly stupid as it would be for the Academy to exclude it.
James Franco FTW!
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect The Dark Knight to make the cut here for Best Picture, but a part of me thought Nolan would get it. Franco's nominated in the wrong category, and yes, the Tom Cruise nomination is one for the ages. The Milk snub was very surprising, but I suspect it will bounce back with the guild awards (same thing happened to Capote, but the opposite for Into the Wild).
ReplyDeleteThe Globes are becoming less and less relevent it seems. It almost seems they make these strange choices because everybody expects them to. I'll be watching, but I really think the other precursers are going to have more bearing near nomination time.
Very very interesting. We have a big wet kiss to The Reader, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, and Slumdog are staying afloat fairly well, Revolutionary Road is officially back in the game, and Milk, Dark Knight, Gran Torino just received a ridiculous bitch slap, but I think we can take them in stride; as others have said, these shouldn't be taken nearly as seriously as the Guild awards, so for now they're an amusing referendum along the way.
ReplyDeleteOn the flipside, I am ecstatic about all the love for In Bruges. Doubt is doing quite well for itself. Tom Cruise and James Franco sort of came out of left field (the latter moreso for being in the wrong category). I think out of all the snubs Josh Brolin (and Milk in general) hurts the most.
Honestly, the Golden Globes haven't been relevant in years. When honestly was the last time they accurately predicted the oscars? I think the snubs for The Dark Knight can be attributed to the fact that it was definitely more popular in the U.S. than overseas. I personally am taking these nominations with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteI think otherwise. At least in Latin America The Dark Knight is really loved, specially because of Heath Ledger.
ReplyDeleteBut you are right in saying that the Globes rarely predict Oscar choices. I'm still certain that The Dark Knight is going to be nominated for bet picture.
indeed, more than anything else, the Globes now are just good for advertising...the FYC ads can use the nominations/wins from the Globes, and the dvd box art can as well...they do very little for the Oscar race as a whole, but are not completely worthless...just another precursor, though not on par with the guilds at all
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the Globes are more of a marketing scheme, and seem to be more important for TV awards than film awards. Nobody missed the ceremony last year and I doubt they will pay much attention this year either.
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Globes mantra:
ReplyDeleteLet's nominate people who are hot and dress well...we don't need those little people like Taraj P. Henson and Richard Jenkins...instead, we'll nominate Tom Cruise because, though he was quite awful, giving a nomination to Josh Brolin for Milk would mean supporting a gay film.
Where's Thomas Newman?
It´s sad to say but last two years the 5 oscar´s films that were nominated for best picture were in that list…
ReplyDeleteBye: Milk, Changeling, Gran Torino, TDK, Wall-E, Rachel and Doubt. Nice films…but this list affect a these films…
I don't understand why everyone is so shocked about the Tom Cruise thing... John Travolta in Hairspray, anyone? This is exactly the sort of thing the GGs do! Nominations for A-list celebrities in flamboyant roles. Frankly I was much more shocked about Ralph Fiennes!
