The Dark Knight is not looking so great. The only uncertainty is Doubt (fitting title). So, there is still hope for Revolutionary Road or the Dark Knight (maybe even Wall-E). Thoughts?

I was questioning the possibility of all four principles in Doubt getting nominated for Oscars, but its looking more and more like it might be here to stay, at least in the acting categories. It also looks like the early buzz for Clint Eastwood's performance in Gran Torino is all but dead with Jenkins and Pitt taking the last two open spots.
ReplyDeleteI know that there are usually a few shake ups in the 20 acting nominations, but I think these will probably stick pretty well come nomination time
It looks like only two of TDK, F/N, and RR will make the Best Pic cut, and I still lean toward TDK getting in. I'm just not convinced about RR's momentum.
ReplyDeleteFor Actress it seems we now have seven very strong contenders, and whoever gets omitted there will be some people who are legitimately pissed off. Sally Hawkins, despite getting lots of love on critics' lists, seems to be falling behind with Melissa Leo and Angelina picking up the pace. I'll be furious if Hawkins doesn't get her dues, but this is honestly one hell of a category this year.
Best Actor does seem to be nearly set, with Pitt looking like a pretty safe bet and DiCaprio starting to fade.
Cruz still running away with Supporting Actress, Ledger same with Supporting Actor.
Agree about Eastwood, still don't think Jenkins is in a safe spot, Pitt surprisingly seems like a lock right now.
ReplyDeleteReally dissapointed that Marisa Tomei didn't get in, I'm surprised Amy Adams made the cut, but either her or Taraji P. Henson won't make the cut and will be replaced by Tomei or DeWitt.
No Hawkins was the biggest shock, but i think in the end Jolie and Leo will not make the cut, possibly Winslet for Rev Road.
Dark Knight's chances are really dwindling, needs DGA and PGA to make it in at this point

These numbers are quite arbitrary, but if I had to quantify it'll look something like that. The Dark Knight is fading big time. It might still get a nod, but it will come as a surprise .
The Dark Knight could use some Guild love, but it still might make the Oscar cut. The Guild isn't always right. Surprisingly.
I will be so mad if Wall-E gets nominated. That is the last film I want to see in the top five, even if it was good!
ReplyDeleteI wish Cate Blanchett would get a little more attention. She looks absolutely beautiful in all of the Benjamin Button trailers and photos. She is an overall amazing actress. I am glad Sally Hawkins did not get nominated. She annoyed the hell out of me in that movie. Would rather chew on a lightbulb then listen to her voice again... Also, in response to the Wall-E comment... it is a great movie, and it is very much deserving of a place in the top five like any other film, but I just don't think it will make the cut. Go Brad Pitt!
ReplyDeleteI see, so Sally Hawkins shouldn't get nominated for one of the most impressive performances of '08, but Cate Blanchett should be getting more attention for looking "absolutely beautiful" in a trailer?
ReplyDeleteI still think TDK to be more deserving than, for example, Revolutionary Road. That kind of drama has being shown before and failed to have a nomination (Little Children). Doubt will score big in the acting categories but wont make it to the best picture.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Frost/Nixon but for some reason i dont believe it should be so locked in the category.
For me just 3 are locks: Benjamin Button, Milk and Slumdog.
I really think TDK changed the way people look at a super hero film and besides that you have it's amazing box office success. It would be unwise from AMPAS not to nominate TDK.

ReplyDeleteBased on the precursors, it appears that F/N has a good shot. Of course, the precursors aren't always right. In fact, there is a high chance that they will be wrong somehow when Oscar nods are announced. I think DK is still in the running, but its becoming more of a dark horse. I wouldn't be upset if any of the 7 movies made it to the top five. They're not as derisive as before, so we'll get a good regardless.
