Hugh Jackman to HOST Oscars

AMPAS reports:

Beverly Hills, CA –– Hugh Jackman will host the 81st Academy Awards® telecast, producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon announced today. This will be Jackman’s first time center stage at the Oscar show, although he has previously been a presenter.
“Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star,” said Mark and Condon in a joint statement. “He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion. Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year’s movies – and to have fun doing it.”

  1. Interesting. You think that will have any impact on Australia's fading chances to get a best pic nomination?

  2. Not really. He's just popular right now, and they've got a point, he is rather classy.

It's an unusual move, but potentially a clever one. The onslaught of comedians the last few years have left the ceremony feeling kind of lightweight in my opinion.

  3. At least it wasn't Justin Timberlake. Still, I really wanted Ricky Gervais. He brought solace to the horrendous Emmys this year, and I think he would have been an excellent choice as well. But I'll keep an open mind for Jackman.

  4. Gervais made it sound like he basically turned it down, that he didn't think he'd be given enough freedom hosting the Oscars... Jackman makes a lot of sense I think

  5. Jackman hosting the Tony Awards made sense. But the Oscars? I'm not so sure. I could be proven wrong. Maybe he will bring some gravity to the role as host. I just hope he doesn't try to be the comedian. He's bound to do a singing monologue though!
