BFCA: The One that Matters...

There are many awards given out during this season but Oscar-wise, very few are significantly relevant. The Critics' Choice Awards is part of this selected group of precursors.

My reactions to today's nominations:

Into the Wild has received a huge boost, if it takes this award (likely, with 7 nods); expect the Sean Penn indie hit to turn into a Best Picture nominee. If the HFPA also nominate the film in the Drama category, then it's on its way to the Kodak!

Emile Hirsch, Viggo Mortensen and mostly, Amy Adams benefit a lot from their respective nominations. The BFCA nominees in the leading categories usually match with Oscar's.

Jolie, Cotillard and Christie are looking more and more likely to become Best Actress nominees... Sadly, things are not looking that great for Laura Linney or Keira Knightley.

Vanessa Redgrave and Catherine Keener could become Best Supporting Nominees as well (but the same cannot be said about Romola Garai and Julia Roberts).

Johnny Depp finally makes a Best Actor lineup but the race has turned now into a Day-Lewis vs. Clooney showdown!

Michael Cera and Nikki Blonsky will probably take the Young Actor/Actress awards.

Expect a complete Predictions Update after the Golden Globe nominations are announced...

Your thoughts on the BFCA noms?

  2. Glad to see Atonement got nominated. So it is a lock now.

  3. Badly for James MCAvoy, but very good for KEira Knightley. For me, she's one of the worst actresses and her only good performance was "Pride and predujice".

  4. I guess it is the time of the year when people start bashing one film in order to boost another. It's a shame that things have to resort to childish antics.

Oscar nominations aren't until January. So know one knows ANYTHING at this point.

  5. Sorry mistake: No one knows anything. I think it bears repreating anyway.

  7. I think that Clooney is definitely solid for an Oscar nomination, but I really don't consider it a DDL vs. Clooney race. Despite Johnny Depp's absence from the early precursors, I think he's still a more likely choice than Clooney. I could be wrong, of course. But Depp has gotten several raves already for his turn as Sweeney. While George received very good reviews, they weren't raves. Just my two cents. I could be completely off on this.

I'm a little disappointed at the lack of Frank Langella in the Best Actor list, but maybe he'll do better at the Globes. I haven't seen Atonement yet - I'll whine about James McAvoy after I have. This Saturday.

What I would really like to see for this category is a Viggo nomination (and maybe even a win).

Also sad to see no Max von Sydow in Supporting. But I'm happy for Casey.

And Cate! Two nominations - I thought she was a lost cause for the Lead Actress category for Golden Age.

  8. Very happy to see some love for Sweeney, Depp and Burton, though they most likely won't win anything.
Not happy about Clooney at all, he is way overrated, his performance was good but certainly not great.
But, when looking at the early precursors,I too, think it's Clooney vs DDL.Sadly. But who knows what will happen, the race is unpredictable right now.
Also unhappy about Gosling,IMO, he has no business in the Best Actor category. Very surprised about the lack of acting noms for Atonement, but I'm not complaining since I'm not very fond of prissy and overacting Knightley.

  9. IMO way too early (and wrong) to say that the Best Actor race has turned into a DDL vs Clooney showdown. Sweeney will gain tremendous buzz once the embargo is lifted and all the reviews pour in (we have some raves already) and with a good box-office run (which is always a plus) Sweeney will emerge as a major contender, just like Atonement which I still have on my list!

  10. I agree that it is too early to call a Clooney/DDL showdown. There is still a lot more buzz to be had. Once you have the 5 nominees for Actor, whoever they are, the game can start anew really. Some other actor like Langella or Depp maybe Mortenson, could end up with momentum and push Clooney or DDL to the curb. Personally I can't see Clooney being a frontrunner with THAT performance. He may get by with his charm but ultimately when people vote I just don't see them giving him another Oscar for a performance that is really the same one he gave in Syriana, minus the weight gain. At least that's what I hope.

  11. I wish James McAvoy is nominated for the Academy Awards; he is one of the best actors of our time. He is excellent in every performance. He was superb in "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "The Last King of Scotland", and he is magnificent once again in "Atonement."

  12. I have a feeling that the Academy will be like F the critics. James McAvoy & Viggo are both more deserving IMO than Geoorge Clooney. I mean it's a typical George Clooney role.

A great boost for Atonement, I really enjoyed it.

  13. Atonement will get a Best Pic nod that for sure but I dont think it can be called the frontrunner anymore.

Unfortunately, that's what happens. I'm sick of the No Country fans bashing other movies , I've resorted to rooting for There Will Be Blood ( I haven't even seen it).
