Hey all...just a bit on the curious side in regard to the whole idea of de-glam for an actor. I know for an actress it can do a world of good (Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, etc)in regard to getting a film noticed and their due praise. When it comes to men, it's a bit trickier. I'm sort of at a loss for a good example of a dude going the ugly route and getting recognized (if anyone has good examples, be sure to post them) but since "Grace is Gone" has just opened and John Cusack has sort of de-glammed himself for the part, my curiousity was piqued. What do you guys think....does Cusack stand to benefit from not playing Lloyd Dobbler in "Grace is Gone" or does the de-glam issue only work for the ladies?
Here is the trailer if you want a decent idea of what he looks like in the flick:
I think Ugly can be sexy for AMPAS.
ReplyDeleteWith Grace is Gone, I don't think it makes that much of a difference, but Javier Bardem's look in No Country, with that hairdo, now that's bound to stand out for the Academy. It's all about how much of a stand-out the character and their appearance is. That's just my opinion.
Hmm, I guess they do like pretty people in ugly make-up, don't they? Certainly the actors branch likes to see beautiful people de-glamming and even wearing ugly make-up.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you read responses to posts with video clips and pictures from Sweeney Todd, note all of the comments about how hot Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter look in the film. The Academy may feel the exact same way.
Alison- good point about Sweeny Todd, though I have a feeling that people would comment on how hot Johnny Depp looked if he was in a Barney the Dinosaur outfit....they tend to just unequivically love the man lol
