What has the NBR done to the race?

  1. Atonement got a Top 10 mention which saved it but other than that, no big change. No Country may be jumping in front of it at this point or at least for the moment.
  2. It's a huge boost for No Country for Old Men in nearly every category. Picture, Director, and Screenplay. It's going to be close and I think its safe to say the "L" word. It's a LOCK!
  3. There Will Be Blood, Charlie Wilson's War, (not that anyone is surprised) and American Gangster take some blows in the race. No Top 10 mentions hurts them alot.
  4. Amy Ryan may have just locked in her place along with Cate Blanchett for her stunning performance in Gone Baby Gone. The film itself did well, especially for director Ben Affleck.
  5. Casey Affleck is looking good for The Assassination of Jesse James but there are a lot of veterans trying to jump into the Supporting Actor race which makes him a bit vulnerable. (I personally think he'll make it)
  6. The Bucket List and The Bourne Ultimatium help bring attention to Jack Nicholson and the latter's stunning editing, cinematography, and sound. It may have been just a mention at best.
  7. Can Ryan Gosling get nominated? Or the film's screenplay? For a film that isn't getting screeners, it sure is doing well thus far.
  8. How happy are Tim Burton fans for him right now? I'm ecstactic but this doesn't lock him in by any means. He's still got a hill to climb as well as the film, Sweeney Todd.
  9. George Clooney and Julie Christie are looking likely at this point. Clooney needs Washington to fall off, (which he is at the moment) and Christie might be 1st or 2nd lock in her competitive race. (Cotillard is nearly locked in)
  10. Is The Kite Runner getting nominated for Best Picture? I sure wish I knew.

  1. I am glad The Kite Runner got mentioned in the top 10 best films. I think its really gonna be a good one!

  2. like spice, i'm glad kite runner got mentioned.

i do hope Christie is a lock...she did a great job.

i don't know that Amy Ryan's in the #2 spot behind Blanchett though...i think we need to see how this atonement supporting actress deal plays out.

  3. -No Country for Old Men has been a lock since it's screening in Cannes.

-Amy Ryan is also a lock. What this helped is bringing attention to other aspects of Gone Baby Gone.

-Charlie Wilson's War is NOT an Oscar threat, American Gangster needs a Globe nod or it's done, and There Will Be Blood needs nods other than Cinematography and Actor or it's in trouble

  4. Free, I don't know that TWBB is really a contender. So far it hasn't even received an actor nod. It's still early, so we'll see what happens after the screenings of the film this week.

  5. Yeah I know. I'm getting such a weird feeling about this one. On the one hand, it's got great reviews on RT (though, as you stated, it's early).

On the other hand, people like Sasha and others seemed to be polarized by its negative kind of mood. I don't know if it's still a contender, but I don't know that it isn't. Because of this, though, I'd say it's definitely not a frontrunner, that's for sure.

  6. I'm Not There and Hairspray wasn't mentioned at all either.

I don't think that it is necessarily a bad thing though, because there are movies that weren't mentioned by the NBR that have gone on and received nominations and some even won.

  7. Hey all, I saw a preview screening of The Kite Runner last night. Suffice to say, it's one of my favorites so far this year. Everything you loved from the book (if you read it) and more. Having said that, Oscar chances may be dwindling depending on reviews and b.o.

  8. No Country has no chance to win the academy award, a nomination yes but win please. Not only is it similar to the departed, its inferior to the Departed(yes it is and before you say otherwise make sure you have actually seen No Country For Old Men-which is good but not best picture good)When Sweeny Todd or Antonement win you will see what i mean. Academy is gonna honor Sweeny hes waiting he wants those bleeders.

  9. The Departed was the most OVERRATED movie of last year. It did not deserve to win ANYTHING.

  10. First of all, everything is a matter of opinion, and nobody knows anything. The Kite Runner got a sympathy vote, I think, but I haven't seen it, so who am I to say. Julie Christie was waaaay better than Marion Cotillard, and deserves an Oscar nomination. Nobody is a LOCK. It's too early to tell. The NBR really doesn't mean that much, just like the Globes. We just have to wait for more precursors....
