Baz Luhrmann may jump from pre-WWII Australia to America's Jazz Age.
The "Australia" helmer has purchased the rights to "The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald's tome of the Roaring Twenties. While a script does not yet exist, Luhrmann intends to focus on it after "Australia's" awards run. No studio is attached yet.
Fitzgerald's novel of American excess has spawned a Broadway play and multiple films, including Jack Clayton's 1974 pic starring Robert Redford and scripted by Francis Ford Coppola.

As of now, there has really yet to be a successful adaptation of this story. I remain skeptical if he can pull it off, as he has yet to impress me with a film of his. Still, I'll be open to the idea.

Moulin Rouge was a good movie but not because of him...
certainly not my favorite filmmaker, but i'd be curious to see the big and brash version of Gatsby...it'll be a disaster, but an interesting one

ReplyDeleteI could see Cate Blanchett as Daisy and Brad Pitt as Gatsby, though.
Brad Pitt would work well as Gatsby, seeing as how he looks almost like a young Robert Redford sometimes. However, whenever I read the book, I always pictured a more Christian Bale-like person, ala Brcue Wayne in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, Fincher seems to have really captured the essence of F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary world, visually and character-wise.
