One DVD this week will 'Drag' you to the store to buy it!

Perhaps my title this week gives things away a bit too easily, but one film this week stands head and shoulders above the rest on DVD. This makes my PICK OF THE WEEK a rather simple decision. It's:
Drag Me to Hell
This is not only one of the better horror films of recent years, it's also by far the most fun you'll have with a recent horror movie. It may be a bit campy for some, but it's incredibly well made and well worth a viewing if you even have a little appreciation for the horror genre. It's just a fiendishly good time.
-The week is not without its other charms, as two other films are worth a look. They are Atom Egoyan's Adoration, and the Sundance horror/suspense flick The Killing Room. The former film is a dark and intelligent drama, but it won't be for everyone. If you like Egoyan's films, you'll probably enjoy this. As for the latter film, it got good marks at Sundance, but failed to find any distribution, so DVD is where it'll make its mark. It's kind of like SAW meets Cube, but in a good way. It's worth checking out one day if that sounds at all appealing to you.
-The other movies out this week are the mediocre and forgettable The Proposal, and the steaming turd that is Land of the Lost. Neither are worth your time as one is exactly what you think it is, and one is even worse than you feared it would be. Watch at your own risk.
-For my Vintage pick, I'm choosing, in honor of the long awaited release of Where the Wild Things Are, a grouping of both Spike Jonze movies and a few flicks that might work along the same lines as the film coming out this week. The Jonze flicks are Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, while the other movies I'm recommending are based on children's books and are Bridge to Terabithia and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This varied assortment should get you in the right mindset for the arrival of the Wild Things on Friday, if that's something you're looking forward to.
-What will you be watching on DVD this week?

  1. No dvds for me this week, had to save up money to buy Uncharted 2 for the PS3, which is so cinematic in its presentation it feels almost more like a movie than a video game. I may rent Drag Me to Hell, but it looks like another downer of a week for dvds. Transformers 2 on blu-ray next week though. :)

  3. Well, we all know how I feel about Transformers 2, but I have heard that Uncharted 2 works like a good movie

  4. And a Raimi horror fest is not the worst way to spend some time

  5. Drag Me To Hell is a terrific film, but I have so many other ones to catch up on that buying a movie doesn't really seem worth it to me right now.

  6. Yeah, I'm well aware of how much you hated TF2 Joey, lol. But I still enjoyed it, more so than the first one I dare say. You have to admit that the visual effects were pretty astounding, and I can't wait to see scenes like the forest battle in blu-ray. I will definitely have to check out Drag Me to Hell.

  7. and Neo, I'd actually argue that the only way I'd consider the effects (or any part of Transformers 2) astounding is in the following statement "It's astounding that they spent all this money on a product where you can't tell what's going on at any given point", but that's just me...

  8. LOL Joey. That brightened my day. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. More than ever I need mindless escapism, and TF2 is a decent enough distraction for me to kill a couple of hours. :)

  9. Fair point, but I wouldn't call that escapism, more like torture, but that's what makes the world go round...
