Village Voice critic Aaron Hillis has a great article that goes over all the years in his opinion that deserved 10 nominees for Best Picture. The whole article can be found here, but these are the years he came up with:
1951
1969
1975
1992
1999
Personally, I think that it all depends on what movies get nominated, as 10 nominees could be good or bad for any given year, but that's just me.

99 and 75 are great picks. 75 may have already had the strongest Best Picture lineup of all time in my opinion.

I honestly could figure out a 10 grouping for almost every year, but it all depends on what the films are
ReplyDeleteI'd go with 2006. You had Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, Good Nigh, and Good Luck, and Munich nominated. Could have been nominated: Walk the Line, The Constant Gardner, A History of Violence, Junebug, Syriana, Cinderella Man...the list goes on. I thought it was a really good year...especially for actors.

ReplyDeleteI know it sounds like a cop out, but every film critic (myself included) is sort of in the opinion that every year could have 10 nominees just by virtue of us always having our "top 10 lists", which always have honorable mentions and such, so essentially we always state that there were at least 10 great films a year...just my opinion

i am always struck by 1993 - Schindler's List, The Piano, Short Cuts, The Remains of the Day, In the Name of the Father, Fearless, Philadelphia, Jurassic Park, Farewell My Concubine, The Fugitive. Truly a great year for movies...
