Who else should we spotlight in the Under the Circuit series?

As you no doubt see on the Main Page (but in case you missed it), Sam Rockwell is our latest subject for the Under the Circuit series of articles (the latest article on Rockwell can be found here), following in the footsteps of Michael Keaton (here), John Cusack (here), and Jim Carrey (here). As we move forward, look for an upcoming piece on Mark Ruffalo, among others, but who else would you like to see get featured in this series?
-Feel free to also comment on your favorite Sam Rockwell films, or anyone's in the series in general...

  1. I'll be handling the Ruffalo article, so look for that in the coming weeks!

  3. Any read on Zooey Deschanel is worth my time.

  4. I'd definitely be interested in writing something on her, as she's one of my very favorites in the business. I'd be inclined to wait till she has a few more roles, but if no one writes anything up on her, I'll tackle her for sure.

  5. On the Zooey note... maybe Joseph Gordon-Levitt. One of my favorite up and comers.

  6. I'm pretty sure one of us has him preselected to do, but if not, he's certainly one that will show up sooner or later on this. The hope is to mix older and younger performers and writers and directors, but we'll see how it goes.

  7. Definitely someone to consider...

  8. As far as Zooey and Gordon-Levitt go, I kinda agree with Joey on the fact that they should probably have a bigger resume. Not to say they both haven't been snubbed in their young careers (even though JGL has been around forever, his real work only started around 5 years ago), but I wouldn't say they are "due" yet. I think it's safe to say that both will receive their accolades in the near future, especially JGL. Personally I'd rather see Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman, Jeff Daniels or Christian Bale get the treatment first. Though I'm sure all of these guys are already on your radar already.

  9. Indeed about Joe and Zooey. This is not to say they wouldn't be fine additions to the series (and likely will end up being done sooner than later), since JGL was snubbed in my eyes for Brick, Mysterious Skin, The Lookout, and (500) Days of Summer...though the point remains that that's half his resume. A fuller body of work never hurts. Same goes for Zooey, who was snubbed in my eyes for All The Real Girls and (500) Days of Summer...though she was great in a lot of small movies like The Go-Getter and others.

All of the names you mentioned are under consideration, and a few were preselected to be done, so yes...they're on our radar, so be on the lookout for them!

  10. Gary Oldman has several performances that should have been nominated (The professional, the Dark Knight, True Romance, Harry Potter films etc.)

  11. These suggestions are fantastic. Each and every one of the actors mentioned so far have proven themselves with great performances; whether it's Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Brick and (500) Days of Summer, Barry Pepper in 25th Hour and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Kevin Bacon in Murder in the First and The Woodsman, Jeff Daniels in The Squid and the Whale and The Purple Rose of Cairo, Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun and American Psycho, or Gary Oldman in...well, a shitload of films.

The only person who I wouldn't really spotlight - at least not for a while - is Zooey Deschanel. Not only is she still a very young actress, but she hasn't had a good role yet.

I say wait until she breaks free from being typecast as the manic pixie fantasy girlfriend.

  12. Coasterkev2000- Indeed, and he'll be done sooner than later, I assure you. He's been preselected by the staff.

  13. Robert- Agreed on all except Zooey Deschanel, since arguably her best work is in All The Real Girls, and she was far from how you described, in my book at least.

  14. I don't think we've hit the point yet where we can say that Deschanel needs an Oscar nomination.

But I'm going to drop Donald Sutherland's name here. Not being nominated for Ordinary People was almost a crime, and not the only time he has been wronged. He should be featured in Under the Circuit.

  15. And when you do JGL, don't forget his amazing work in Mysterious Skin, arguably his best performance.

  16. I second Donald Sutherland, and also Mia Farrow has never been nominated. Some others of the top of my head that haven't been mentioned: Steve Martin, Malcolm McDowell, jeff Goldblum, Dennis Quaid, Bruce Willis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Meg Ryan. As far as directors, the only one I can think of is Spike Lee.

  17. Ben #1- Fair enough about Zooey, though enough people have asked about her between here, the forum, and in emails that we'll probably tackle her.

The same goes for Donald Sutherland, he's been mentioned a few times.

  18. Robbie- Good call on all of those except Spike Lee, who's bee nominated for 2 Oscars (for his documentary 4 Little Girls and also for his script for Do The Right Thing).

  19. I'd also like to see a shout out to John Candy, his performance in Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of my all time favs
