The Next Scorsese...

Joey here...now I don't mean "the next Scorsese" as in talent (though ironically one of the directors in the late 90's who was coined as one of the next Scorsese's was in fact Kevin Smith...fun bit of trivia) but in the avenue of a director that is really overdue for an Oscar nomination or win. This year we had a few examples in Tim Burton, Ridley Scott, and Sidney Lumet. Other names that might spring to mind are David Cronenberg, Cameron Crowe, Peter Weir, etc...

What directors do you think are grossly overdue for recognition?

  1. I didn't realize there were multiple names...Martin Scorsese of course said that Wes Anderson was the "next Scorsese" as for the post...I think we can agree that until this year the Coen boys were quite overdue. And of course, Sidney Lumet, but I will say Terrence Mallick who has only been nominated once despite making four beautiful films.

  2. Malick is a good choice...Wes Anderson is the only one dubbed by Scorsese himself...the Coens are almost certainly going to be excluded from this list very soon....then I believe they should be replaced by PT Anderson

  3. David Fincher is another one. I'd like to see him get a nomination soon.

I was most disappointed this year at the passing over of Sidney Lumet. This man could teach all of these guys a thing or two about directing an ensemble piece. And at 83 years old he hasn't lost his touch.

  4. Fincher for sure...Lumet is a man apart, and I wouldn't doubt him making another Oscar level film (though in the most recent issue of Entertainment Weekly he comments on all his old nominated films, and seems to be generally pessimistic about his chances with the Academy overall...that and he seemed to really hate Rocky)

  5. well at least Scorsese got nominations. Poor Burton has been snubbed time and time again and may never even be nominated.

  6. Burton, Anderson, Alexander Payne, and Lumet

all of these are the best choices.

  7. David Fincher definitely: I still maintain that he should have been nommed for Zodiac. PT Anderson for sure: I was thrilled at his nod, now he needs a win. Others for me include Christopher Nolan and Cameron Crowe.

  12. James Ivory, Jim Sheridan, to go along with Lumet, Weir, Burton, Lynch, Malick, Fisher, and Nolan.
