Actually, Clayton, this only hurts Juno if it's nominated for an Oscar. It may affect its win.
But the AMPAS ballots were due yesterday. Unless the voters knew who the GG winners were going to be ahead of time, this makes no difference as far as Oscar nominations. For better or for worse.
Well, that's a bit of an ignorant statement isn't it? You can't possibly know if a movie is good or bad until you actually see it. And anyway, what qualifies good or bad beyond whether an individual likes it or not? If Sweeney is nominated for Best Picture and loses, it doesn't mean the other is a better movie, it just means that the people who voted liked the other movie more. All art is completely subjective, remember that.
Earlier this year, I groaned when I first heard about this movie. Now it's one of my favorite films of the year. I can confidently say I enjoyed it even more than Juno. So don't be so quick to judge.
The GG's have basically no impact on the Oscar race. Any similarities are purely because they happened to agree. Considering that none of the HFPA is in AMPAS, it might as well a 5-year-old giving out the awards. I'm not saying that the Globes suck, I'm just saying that they don't have any correlation to the Oscars. However, a portion of each of the guilds is also a member of AMPAS, so that's where it counts. Sweeney was snubbed all around (though the PGA's, of course, won't be announced until tomorrow), but Juno got a nod at both SAG and the WGA Awards. This neither hurts nor helps its, or Sweeney's, cause.
Exactly, Brian, and since the AMPAS voting polls closed yesterday, these results can't encourage any voter to change their mind and nominate something that they wouldn't have.
It's because of the date change. The ballots used to be due after the GG winners were announced, so the voters may have looked at the winners then. But now that the Oscars are earlier, they can't.
Who would you like to see be the main villain in the next Batman film?

ReplyDeletePoor Juno. A shame.
ReplyDeleteO....M....G! that is awesome! but i still don't think that it has a chance at the Oscars...
ReplyDeleteActually, Clayton, this only hurts Juno if it's nominated for an Oscar. It may affect its win.
ReplyDeleteBut the AMPAS ballots were due yesterday. Unless the voters knew who the GG winners were going to be ahead of time, this makes no difference as far as Oscar nominations. For better or for worse.
just like it hurt LMS... but YES YES YES! 2 wins!
ReplyDelete(when are they doing the lesser awards)
how? Little Miss Sunshine didn't win Best Comedy/Musical last year...
ReplyDeleteSame goes for the other winners or losers. The Oscar polls were closed yesterday. Makes no difference now.
ReplyDeleteIt's just nice to see some different films and people winning, like Schnabel. :)
Exactly. And what happened to the film that beat it?
ReplyDeleteI would've been happy either way... But I'm glad the musical prevailed. =D
ReplyDeleteI would kill too see Juno and Sweeney Todd in the Oscar's Best Picture shortlist, but that's highly wishful thinking.
Sweeney may be back in the best picture race now =]
ReplyDeletelast I checked it was umm...not nominated for the Oscar after being the film to beat all season
ReplyDeleteExactly. :D
ReplyDeletej.d. what's with the Sweeney hate?
ReplyDeleteHow is this hate?
ReplyDeletei dunno, you just seem to be reacting negatively to the two awards Sweeney Todd won =[
ReplyDeleteWell, I haven't even seen Sweeney Todd, but I already know Juno is better.

I meant that I loved Juno so much and care so little about Sweeney Todd, it wouldn't make sense if I loved it more when I do see it. Jeez.
